DRAW THE CIRCLE WIDE

After the shooting of George Floyd, I was given the opportunity through our church to participate in a Black Lives Matter march and a prayer vigil. I wanted to participate and decided to use virtual means because of COVID 19.

Shortly after that, FUMC offered the opportunity to read this book Color of Compromise and it really gave me a new perspective on my church, my country, and the experiences of my fellow Americans. In history class, I did not get the full picture of slavery and the civil rights struggles. This book really helped me see a more complete picture of the history of our country and the church as it relates to racism. It broke my heart knowing that many churches (including mine) did not stand up and fight for change. My heartbreak has led me to feel a need to push forward and learn more. I also want to share what I have learned with others to spread the truth and help make changes to our society to make it stronger.

Thanks for listening,
Stacey Johnston

Worship Cameras Need Replaced

“Lights.  Camera 1 ready.  Camera 2 ready.  Camera 3 on.  We are now live.  Welcome to our Online Worship Service.”

Well, those aren’t the exact words we use on any given Sunday before we begin broadcasting our worship service on Sunday mornings, but it is close. We have been providing Online Worship Video Streaming for many years, long before Covid-19 made it the only way to see and hear the 10:35 service. In the past, the cameras were a pleasant luxury that enabled people to attend worship when they couldn’t be there. Before March of 2020, we averaged about 15 viewers that watched our worship via live-streaming. In our present times, the cameras are a great blessing of necessity.  Since March 2020 we have averaged around 100 family units. While KVOE provides a means to hear worship, seeing the worship service offers a more powerful way to connect with worshipers. We have been blessed with camera equipment that has faithfully served us for many years, but over the last year, those cameras are beginning to wear out.  We are experiencing problems with 2 of the 3 cameras and they need to be replaced. Even after we move back into the sanctuary, the live-streaming of our service will still be a necessity for many of our members and friends who will not be able to safely return because of the Pandemic.

After visiting with our AV Service Provider we are told the replacement will cost us $15,000. If you appreciate the Live-Stream Worship Service, know someone who does, or simply want to help with this important ministry, please consider making a gift to the “Worship Cameras Project.” Contact the church office for more information.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

In May our Jubilee Ringers took on the project of playing our long-standing favorite handbell piece, "Grazioso" by Arnold Sherman, together virtually. To accomplish this, one of our ringers (Lindy) picked up the bells, gloves, music, and mallets from the church and delivered them to our ringers’ homes. Everyone practiced on their own and then recorded themselves. While recording, they were listening to a “click-track” of sorts with the piece playing in their ear as well as me giving measure numbers, counts, and other cues. Cathryn won the contest for most creative setup for recording. She secured her phone (to record) and music to her window blinds! Our bass bell ringers were able to record in the bell room at church due to the number and size of bells they play.

After we each recorded our individual parts, the real magic happened! Irene Diaz spent around 40 hours editing our video using Adobe Premiere, a software program for editing video. She made sure our parts were matched up as closely as possible and added some other nice visual touches.

We are excited to share it again with you during the live-streamed service this Sunday at 10:35. Enjoy!

"Leading Causes of Life"
New Worship Series Beginning in October
This 7-week series is based on a book called Leading Causes of Life: Five Fundamentals to Change the Way You Live Your Life. It is written by two pastors/chaplains (Gary Gunderson with Larry Pray) who realized that we talk a lot about "leading causes of death" but what we really need to focus on are the fundamentals of "abundant, thriving life." In their work with hospitals and health care around the world, they saw some persons crumble under difficult life situations, and others-in the same situations-who were living and thriving. What is the difference? What are the leading causes of life?

Our churches are also facing the realities of a global economy in crisis. But we hope to offer a way to speak, through this series, the language of life. Not that we live in denial, but that we refocus in order to notice all the life that is going on around us. Because it is! It always has and it always will. The whole point of the book and this worship series is that it is possible to live a life that is ABOUT LIFE. Isn't this also the Good News of Jesus Christ? That we might have life abundant through the transforming love shown to us, modeled for us, by Jesus? What an inspiring message, and just possibly a whole new outlook and attitude for our churches.

Join us for this season of saying "yes" to life!
Sunday, September 20, 10:35 a.m.

Parking Lot Worship

This Sunday, September 20, we will continue our 8 am parking lot worship service on the west side of the church.

You will want to make sure your FM radio is working in your vehicle and will be instructed Sunday morning as to what channel to set it at to hear the worship service.

We ask that you remain in your vehicle during the service.

Restrooms will not be available.

It is our hope that this is an opportunity and means for us to more visibly be and feel like we are the church together. Hope to see you!

The 10:35 worship service will continue to be Live-Streamed on KVOE.

This has been an active week at preschool! We are beginning some fall activities, starting nursery rhymes, and also participated in Kansas literacy week activities sponsored by the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center.   Friends Together Preschool was chosen as a participation winner and we will be receiving some new books for the preschool. That is very exciting for all of us.

If any of you have any small beanie babies that you are willing to give to the preschool I am in search of some for an interactive literacy activity for the children. The ones I could use are snake, zebra, peacock, walrus. Thank you so much.

Donations Accepted Through September
The SERVE Team is asking for donations of masks to donate to the nursing facilities around town. We are asking people to have them sewn (pattern attached) or purchased and given to the church by the end of September so we can deliver them before the worst of the flu season starts. The pattern is the accepted pattern for the masks that the hospital requested when needing donations. Thank you!
FOOD PANTRY NEWS
We wanted to share some good news with you about our Food Pantry. On Friday, EKAN donated a truckload of supplies to our pantry. This load contained much-needed food, soaps, and non-perishables.  In addition to the non-perishables, there were 2 pallets of perishables, including fresh produce, eggs, frozen food, and bread.  All of the perishables were given away that day to persons in need.

The City of Emporia notified us last week that they had received a sizable grant designated for Food Pantries in this area and they had chosen our pantry to receive $5,000. Our Church Council voted unanimously Sunday to accept this gift.

We continue to purchase food through Aldi's several times a month to assist this important mission. If you have given to the pantry, we thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. If you would like to give, we have established a designation in our giving link through our website that is dedicated to Food Pantry.

If you bring food to the church, we appreciate you as well. We have several dedicated families that donate each week. Food insecurity is fast becoming a big problem for more and more struggling families in Emporia. The need has never been so great. Thank you for being a part of this mission of FUMC.

FOOD PANTRY HELP
If you would like to volunteer to pass out bags to individuals on Thursday or Friday mornings from 9:00 am to noon, please click the link below and sign up.

You can also choose to help bag the food for our patrons.
