NSERC I2I Grants

NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants

The objective of the Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. The I2I Grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through four defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection: Market Assessment, Phase I, Phase IIa, Phase IIb. Global 1HN: Seed Grants Competition and Student Research Assistance Grant

The Global One Health Network currently has two funding competitions open for applications:

Seed Grants (up to $10,000)
Global 1HN has announced its first Seed Grants Competition to provide financial support to researchers currently developing research projects relevant to Global 1HN and the four Research Enabling Platforms (REPs): (1) detection; (2) response; and (3) institutionalization in the global governance of Infectious Diseases (IDs) and AMR; while systematically considering aspects of (4) equity. This seed funding is specifically meant to encourage the development of new collaborative research proposals for major funding agencies and must incorporate applicants across the Network from various disciplinary backgrounds. Application consists of a maximum 2-page description of an original idea to be developed into a full-scale research proposal through the Seed Grant. Candidates should indicate to what funding agency and grant competition they will apply.

Student Research Assistance Grant (up to $11,250)
Global 1HN is offering a grant to support student research assistance in studies conducted by Network members relevant to at least one of the Network’s four REPs. Funding is to employ students to assist in research which contributes to the goals of Global 1HN over one year. The ‘Student Research Assistance Grant’ application form must be completed and submitted.

There is no specific deadline for submission of applications. Competitions will remain open throughout the year until all funds are allocated. For more information please contact Corinne Packer at cpacker@uottawa.ca

Publications & Reviews

Antibiotics Special Edition

An opportunity to showcase One Health AMR and Antibiotic research in Canada presents itself in a special edition of the journal Antibiotics dedicated to related research in Canada. It is hoped that this special edition will have between 10-15 contributions with no more than 3 reviews. Consider submitting your novel research in this area that describe clear advancements evaluated with strong scientific rigour. We want to showcase our excellent work and researchers in this area.  If you would like to contribute a review, please email an outline to Dr. Ray Turner, UofC Dept. of Biological Sciences, at turnerr@ucalgary.ca. Reviews should be critical and contain well thought out opinions. Critically important antimicrobials are generally not needed to treat nonsevere clinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows: Results from a network meta-analysis

There is ongoing debate regarding whether critically important antimicrobials (CIA) should be used to treat infections in food-producing animals. In this systematic review, Drs. Herman Barkema and Jeroen De Buck determined whether CIA and non-CIA have comparable efficacy to treat nonsevere bovine clinical mastitis caused by the most commonly reported bacteria that cause mastitis worldwide. Isolation and Characterization of the Novel Bacteriophage AXL3 against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

The rapid increase in the number of worldwide human infections caused by the extremely antibiotic resistant bacterial pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is cause for concern. An alternative treatment solution in the post-antibiotic era is phage therapy, the use of bacteriophages to selectively kill bacterial pathogens. In this study, the novel bacteriophage AXL3 was isolated from soil and characterized. Dr. Jon Dennis' research in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, identifies a novel virulent phage and characterization suggests that AXL3 is a promising phage therapy candidate, with future research examining modification through genetic engineering to broaden its host range. Take the Plunge to Become Water Wise

Take the Plunge to Become Water Wise

“Most Canadians don't understand the true cost of providing clean water when they turn the tap on every day,” says Lee Jackson, a professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary and Scientific Director at Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets (ACWA), a research facility that advances wastewater treatment technology to address environmental and human health issues. “One of the problems with not understanding the full cost of water is we don't put value on it, so we waste it.” Read the full article here.

COVID-19 variant could 'spread like wildfire through schools' when classrooms reopen, pediatrician worries

Some Alberta doctors say a decision by the province to send kids back to classrooms next week could fuel another surge of COVID-19 infections. Calgary pediatric infectious disease physician, Dr. Jim Kellner says now is not the time for kids to return to schools. Kellner said while Alberta's COVID-19 numbers are improving, there is still a high level of disease in the community and sending kids back could ignite further spread. Read the full article here.

A Fresh Look At Preconditioning Beef Calves

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) accounts for most of the disease and deaths in Alberta feedlots and feedlots in North America. Although BRD is a multifactorial disease, it is mainly associated with bacterial pathogens. Therefore, BRD is treated using antimicrobials, potentially playing a role in the development of antimicrobial resistance. Current management practices increases the risk of BRD and makes it difficult to control. Dr. Karin Orsel and her team are conducting a preconditioning study, using management practices to prepare calves to enter the feedlot, while keeping an eye on the economic value would help reduce the need for antimicrobials.
