One of the objectives of the AMR – One Health Consortium is to provide trainees with external industry experience. This helps the Consortium develop HQPs and gives trainees an opportunity to explore other potential career paths with various industry partners in Alberta. PURE Awards

Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE)

PURE provides up to $6,000 of financial support to UofC undergraduate students to conduct research for 8, 12 or 16 weeks between May and August. The PURE program makes it possible for students to work with on-campus experts to learn how research projects are developed, and how their results can contribute to new knowledge while solving problems in society. Each PURE learning experience is a unique opportunity to develop research skills and explore research interests. These experiences help students develop the abilities to collaborate, communicate, and think critically and creatively. PURE enriches and extends undergraduate learning outside the classroom. Click here for more information.

EFC Research Funding

Call for letters of intent now open!. Egg Farmers of Canada is proud to support Canadian research in egg production, poultry science, animal and human nutrition, and economic and environmental sustainability at universities across the country. EFC’s call for letters of intent is now open, and researchers are invited to complete and submit the funding application form. For this call, EFC has identified nine research priorities, with a specific emphasis on environment and sustainability and end of flock management. NSERC I2I Grants

NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants

The objective of the Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. The I2I Grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through four defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection: Market Assessment, Phase I, Phase IIa, Phase IIb. Alberta Innovates Advance Program - NSERC Alliance

NSERC Alliance – Alberta Innovates Advance (Advance) is a new partnership program between AI and NSERC. Through this program, AI/NSERC will invest in projects that are aligned with Alberta’s innovation and technology strategies that advance discoveries to develop emerging technologies to generate economic, environmental, health and social benefits for Albertans and Canadians. The program provides grants of up to $150,000 per year for up to two years, to support eligible Alberta university researchers with promising discoveries in emerging technologies to begin advancing their research toward the marketplace. Project funding is available to bridge the gap between academic research and technology validation that could later lead to technology transfer and commercialization.

Global1HN

Global 1HN: Seed Grants Competition and Student Research Assistance Grant

The Global One Health Network currently has two funding competitions open for applications:

Seed Grants (up to $10,000)
Global 1HN has announced its first Seed Grants Competition to provide financial support to researchers currently developing research projects relevant to Global 1HN and the four Research Enabling Platforms (REPs): (1) detection; (2) response; and (3) institutionalization in the global governance of Infectious Diseases (IDs) and AMR; while systematically considering aspects of (4) equity. This seed funding is specifically meant to encourage the development of new collaborative research proposals for major funding agencies and must incorporate applicants across the Network from various disciplinary backgrounds. Application consists of a maximum 2-page description of an original idea to be developed into a full-scale research proposal through the Seed Grant. Candidates should indicate to what funding agency and grant competition they will apply.
 
Student Research Assistance Grant (up to $11,250)
Global 1HN is offering a grant to support student research assistance in studies conducted by Network members relevant to at least one of the Network’s four REPs. Funding is to employ students to assist in research which contributes to the goals of Global 1HN over one year. The ‘Student Research Assistance Grant’ application form must be completed and submitted.

There is no specific deadline for submission of applications. Competitions will remain open throughout the year until all funds are allocated. For more information please contact Corinne Packer at cpacker@uottawa.ca

First Nations have shown exemplary handling of pandemic despite unique challenges: infectious disease expert

Although First Nations communities across the province did a great job handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring, they will need to remain vigilant through the current second wave. Besides genetic contributing factors, Dr. John Conly, UofC infectious disease professor, said environmental factors such as inadequate housing and crowded living conditions, insufficient access to clean water and appropriate health care put First Nations at greater risk. Click here to read the full article.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recently published a new report on 'International instruments on the use of antimicrobials across the human, animal and plant sectors'. The report was launched by the three Director-Generals during the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. This webinar will give an overview and review of international instruments that set standards related to the use of antimicrobials across the human, animal and plant sectors, and their release into the environment, including gaps and opportunities for next steps.

NFRF

New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Information Session

The One Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference, postponed from May and Nov 2020, will now go forward as a virtual conference on March 10-12, 2021! The theme for this conference is One Health opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship in animals, humans and the environment, and will feature three half-day live virtual sessions with expert presentations, live virtual trainee research abstract presentations, and recorded research abstract presentations. Click here to register!

Virtual One Health International Bachelor and Master Summer School

This virtual course is organized by the University of Bern and offers a unique opportunity to explore the methods and current knowledge on the health of terrestrial food chains, from soils to plants, animals and humans. Recruitment Opportunities

Postdoctoral Research Position in Data-analytics of the clinical and economic impact of antimicrobial resistance in patients with bacteremia.

The Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary in Conjunction with the AMR - One Health Consortium has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research scientist with experience in the analysis of complex databases to analyze the effects of antimicrobial resistance on the economic and clinical consequences of anti-microbial resistance in patients with bacteremia.  

The successful candidate will be working on a database already established to answer these important questions. Opportunities to collaborate with other members of the one health group will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Experience with statistical analysis using integrated databases is required and an interest of experience in health care economics is desirable. The position is a one year contract.
