Anatomies of Two Amazon Level 7 Job Offers

Today I'd like to share with you two Amazon level 7 job offers. One is at the low end, and the other one is at the high end.

Please note that I have slightly changed the numbers to protect confidentiality but these numbers do reflect the current state of Amazon level 7 job offers.

Amazon has a very flat org structure so there is a lot of job title deflation at Amazon. Many SVPs, VPs, Partners at large tech firms ended up at level 7 at Amazon. On the other hand, I have also seen fresh-out-college graduates who moved up to level 7 inside amazon within 10 years or less. So there is a wide range of experiences and total compensations within level 7.

For reference, Amazon Level 7 compensation is roughly mapped to Google L6/L7 and Facebook E6/E7. In term of job title, Level 7 manager has "Sr. Manager" in their job titles, and level 7 individual contributor has the word "principal" in their job titles (e.g. Principal Product Manager, Principal Software Development Manager, etc.)

Let’s start with a low-end level 7 offer

  • Job title: Sr. Manager

  • Level: 7

  • # of years of work experience: 10+

  • Base Salary: $160,000

  • Year 1 sign-on bonus: $185,000 (paid monthly)

  • Year 2 sign-on bonus: $160,000

  • Restricted Stock Units:  $500,000 worth of RSUs

  • RSU vesting schedule: 5%/15%/40%/40%

Total Compensation:

  • Year 1: $370,000

  • Year 2: $395,000

  • Year 3: $410,000

  • Year 4: $410,000

  • Total: $1,585,000

Now, let’s take a look at a high-end level 7 offer:

  • Job title: Sr. Manager

  • Level: 7

  • # of years of work experience: 20+

  • Base Salary: $160,000

  • Year 1 sign-on bonus: $310,000
  • Year 2 sign-on bonus: $230,000
  • Restricted Stock Units:  $950,000  worth of RSUs

  • RSU vesting schedule: 5%/15%/40%/40%

Total Compensation:

  • Year 1: $517,500

  • Year 2: $532,500

  • Year 3: $540,000

  • Year 4: $540,000

  • Total: $2,129,000

Observations:

  • If you're not familiar with Amazon's compensation structure, here is a quick summary:
    • Amazon's base salary is capped at around $160,000 regardless of your levels. (However, high cost-of-living areas such as San Francisco and NYC have slightly higher cap.)
    • For the first two years, your total compensation consists primarily of your base salary plus your "sign on bonus", which is vested monthly.
    • Amazon has an unusual RSU vesting schedule. The vesting schedule is 5%, 15%, 40% and 40% for year 1 - 4. So you don't get most of your stocks until year 3 and 4.
  • Level 7 total compensation has a wide range: it's roughly between $370K - $540K.
  • For a given role, there is a budget for the role. If your offer is at the lower end, don't feel bad. The Amazon hiring team and recruiters are constrained by their budget for the role. However, in almost single case, you have some room to negotiate. I have done this successfully with many of coaching clients.

SPAC IPO, GameStop, Robinhood, and other Cannot miss tech industry news & key trend

  • If you haven't heard about Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC), I strongly recommend you to read the following articles:
    • What is a SPAC? Explaining one of Wall Street’s hottest trends
    • The Spectacular Rise Of SPACs: The Backwards IPO That's Taking Over Wall Street
    • My quick take: The current SPACs frenzy reminds me of the dotcom explosion and subsequent crash in late 1990s and early 2000s. You might want to join one of the SPAC targeted companies to benefit from IPOs but proceed with caution. Do your research. There is a bubble. However, with COVID recovery and latest round of government stimulus package, it might take some time before the bubble bursts. Focus on joining high growth companies with solid business model and financials. Don't be speculative. It's your career.
  • GameStop and Robinhood: I'm sure many of you have been following the unbelievable stories of GameStop and Robinhood:
  • Jeff Bezos to step down as Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy to take over in Q3
  • MEET ANDY JASSY, AMAZON’S NEXT CEO
    • My quick take: Andy Jassy is a very capable executive (at one point, my manager at Amazon reported into Andy so I had some interactions with him many years ago. He is a sharp and tough boss for sure.) And Bezos is not going anywhere as he remains executive chairman. Amazon's flywheel will continue its dominance.

A quote I'm pondering

Several Naval Ravikant quotes:

“A fit body, a calm mind, a house full of love. These things cannot be bought — they must be earned.”

“Getting rich is about knowing what to do, who to do it with, and when to do it. It is much more about understanding than purely hard work. Yes, hard work matters, and you can't skimp on it. But it has to be directed in the right way. If you don't know yet what you should work on, the most important thing is to figure it out. You should not grind at a lot of hard work until you figure out what you should be working on.”

"“Reading is the ultimate meta-skill that can be traded for anything else.”
