Their new partnership with Edmonton Public Libraries will help disseminate science topics to the public in multiple languages, and they are seeking personnel who are fluent in non-English languages. From project leads to other personnel working on the project, the key is to be interested and able to help talk about science. Please share this information with anyone on your team who might be interested in making science accessible across various cultural communities to help reach a broader audience. Please email vcarias@genomealberta.ca with your name, email, lab and language(s).

Funding Opportunities

NSERC I2I Grants

NSERC Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants

The objective of the Idea to Innovation (I2I) Grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. The I2I Grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through four defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection: Market Assessment, Phase I, Phase IIa, Phase IIb. Isolation and sanitation

Isolation and sanitation during COVID-19 may affect human microbiome, scientists say

Kathy McCoy

As people around the world remain isolated in their homes, avoiding close contact with others and meticulously sanitizing their hands and surfaces, scientists warn there may be unintended consequences of these necessary pandemic protocols. Dr. Kathy McCoy, scientific director of the UofC's International Microbiome Centre, said she expected the intense focus on hygiene during the COVID-19 pandemic to have a "dramatic" effect on people's microbiomes. Click here to read the full article.

Health, welfare, and resilience of beef calves

UCalgary-led research looks to improve health, welfare, and resilience of beef calves

Karin Osel

Dr. Karin Orsel and a consortium of researchers are doing a deep dive into a cattle management system called pre-conditioning. They’re investigating whether low-stress handling on the ranch, combined with gradual weaning and a schedule of vaccinations "pre-conditions" them to better adapt to feedlot life. Click here to read the full article.

From heroes to scapegoats: How Canada's regional top doctors have weathered the COVID-19 pandemic

Lorian Hardcastle

The perception of public health officials is again being tested in Canada, this time at a scale not contemplated 18 years ago. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the top doctors from each province and territory have experienced periods of near-superhero status only to then be met with skepticism and public pressure as the months dragged on and their roles became muddled with political decisions. Dr. Lorian Hardcastle, an associate professor in the Faculty of Law and Cumming School of Medicine at the UofC, said once the post-mortem is done on Canada’s COVID-19 response, provinces may want to consider updating their legislation to clarify responsibilities in a crisis. Click here to read the full article.

Increasing Incidence of Invasive Group A Streptococcus Disease in First Nations Population, Alberta, Canada, 2003–2017

Greg Tyrrell

The incidence of invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS) disease in the general population in Alberta, Canada, has been steadily increasing. To determine whether rates for specific populations such as First Nations are also increasing, Dr. Greg Tyrrell and his team investigated iGAS cases among First Nations persons in Alberta during 2003–2017. They identified cases by isolating GAS from a sterile site and performing emm typing, and collected demographic, social, behavioral, and clinical data for patients. Aztreonam Lysine Increases the Activity of Phages E79 and phiKZ against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01

Jonathan Dennis

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pernicious bacterial pathogen that is difficult to treat because of high levels of antibiotic resistance. A promising alternative treatment option for such bacteria is the application of bacteriophages; the correct combination of phages plus antibiotics can produce synergistic inhibitory effects. In this study, Dr. Jonathan Dennis describes morphological changes induced by sub-MIC levels of the antibiotic aztreonam lysine (AzLys) on P. aeruginosa PA01, which may in part explain the observed phage–antibiotic synergy (PAS). Read the full publication in Microorganisms here
