What's Happening This Week
Transitioning from At-Home to On-Campus Status
We are excited to see the COVID-19 positive case numbers and hospitalizations trending downward across San Diego County. We recognize that every family has its own set of circumstances and are proud to be able to offer both an in-person and at-home learning option for our students and families this year. We recognize that some students need to change their status from in-person to at-home learning or vice-versa at times due to extenuating circumstances; however, we would appreciate your letting us know if you need to change your status so our teachers can plan accordingly. After all, we are doing our best to maintain a minimum 6-foot distance between students in our classrooms (both indoor and outdoor) and it is helpful for our teachers to know how many students they need to plan for on a given day. If you are changing your status and are planning to return to campus to join in-person instruction or need to log into your classes via Zoom for an extended period of time due to extenuating circumstances, please contact Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, Principal, and Tracy Ahrens, our Attendance Officer, so that we can update our lists for teachers accordingly. Thank you!

Grauer Donation Drive For COVID-19 Patients In San Diego
Many COVID-19 patients in San Diego County are dealing with isolation while they're in the hospital. Grauer student Sean F. '23 has organized a donation drive for the Grauer community to help UC San Diego Health patients who are isolated while they are battling the disease. Donations requested include new books, magazines, decks of cards, sudoku books, crossword puzzles, and arts and crafts projects. You can click here to view a "Wish List" on Amazon as examples of things most requested by patients. Items not on the wish list that can also be accepted are new books, magazines, and knitted/crocheted lap blankets (approximate size: 36”x36”). Contact Sean F. '23 or Faculty Lead Nick Scacco with any questions about this donation drive.

Grauer students have a choice of two different ways of donating items:
  • Drop off donations into a bin located in Meyer Hall through March 12. When you enter the donation information in MobileServe, you can either specify your parent as the supervisor so they can approve your hour of service or simply upload a photo and it will verify automatically.
  • Order donations through Amazon to be delivered directly to UC San Diego Health. Click on the Wish List link, add items to your cart, and then choose “Volunteer Services Gift Registry” as the delivery address when you check out. You can create an entry in MobileServe for your Amazon donation, and specify your parent as the supervisor so they can approve your hour of community service.
Thank you to our Grauer students and families for your generosity to help others in our community!

Summer Camps At The Grauer School
The Grauer School’s summer school programs are designed to provide year-long learning, enrichment, remediation, and of course, fun! Whether we are on-line or on-site, we specialize in helping students explore their academic and creative interests in our relationship-driven, college preparatory environment. We offer both week-long enrichment camps for middle and high school students as well as for-credit academic classes to students throughout San Diego County, not just current Grauer School students. This year’s summer sessions are scheduled to run from June 21 through July 9 and July 12 through July 30. Standard enrollment begins April 19 and closes June 14.

In addition to our middle school and high school offerings, The Grauer School will again be hosting the Loly Lutti Pottery Camp (visit lolylutti.com for more information and registration) as well as KidzToPros (kidztopros.com) for our younger campers - click here to view a KidzToPros flyer with more information, and you can save $100 if you register by February 28 and use the code "FLY100". Keep an eye out for our 2021 Summer Session schedule and offerings on our website at grauerschool.com/summer, which will be coming soon!

COVID-19 Testing This Week

We are excited to see the COVID-19 positive case numbers and hospitalizations trending downward across San Diego County.  We are sincerely looking forward to seeing the county move into a less-restrictive tier and watching many of our high school CIF-sports starting again in the next few weeks.  It is hard to believe that high school CIF-sanctioned sports have been on hold for almost a full calendar year; we are looking forward to seeing some of our student-athletes back on the (outdoor) courts and fields soon.
We appreciate our community’s support of our travel policies and our COVID-19 surveillance testing program. As we recognize that many of our families traveled both in and out of state during our annual Ski Week last week, out of an abundance of caution, we will be hosting a virtual, e-Learning week this week (February 22-26). As shared earlier, we are planning to screen all faculty, staff, and students for COVID-19 tomorrow (Wednesday, February 24). Here is tomorrow’s testing schedule:

  • Period 1, 9:00-10:30am~ Grades 7, 8, and 9 (we will be canceling period 1 classes for these students)
  • Period 3, 10:30am-Noon~ Grades 10, 11, and 12 (we will be canceling period 3 classes for these students)

As we recognize that it is next to impossible for students to travel to campus for testing and try to attend a Zoom class at the same time, we will be canceling the applicable class block for students during their assigned testing times (see above). As always, students with Grauer siblings may come at an earlier or later time in order to facilitate only one trip to campus—we are just doing our best to try to spread out our testing efforts so that our students do not have to wait in line. We strongly recommend that you try to come sometime within the testing window rather than showing up right at the testing start or end time. With that said, we will be closing sample collection at noon so we can transport our samples to UCSD’s EXCITE laboratory for testing.

We sincerely appreciate all of your support of our COVID-19 testing program and your efforts to keep our campus safe and our students on-campus during this pandemic. We look forward to seeing our on-campus learners back on campus next Monday, March 1.
Deans' View

Finishing the Quarter Strong

Welcome back! Hopefully Ski Week brought ample time to recharge and revive yourselves. With only three weeks left in the 3rd quarter, now is the time to really dig deep for final refinements and adaptations of work and study habits to really get the most of this time together.
Parents, check the Gradescape system to see how your student is doing, and ask questions of your student. Every student has developed different degrees of independence, but that does not mean they could not benefit from either a kind word or a gentle nudge. Students, be honest with yourselves: enjoy the confidence you’ve earned and ask for help when you need it. It is important to not just look for successes, but to have the courage to seek out areas needing support.

Once we return to campus, office hours with teachers are an excellent opportunity for students to practice self-advocacy and get specific, directed support. They are not regularly scheduled, one-on-one tutoring sessions. For students seeking more regular guidance in a particular subject (for instance, weekly), we would recommend additional support services - tutoring, Daily Checkout, Ed Mentoring - offered through the school, rather than office hours. You can learn more about these services on the Student Support webpage on the school's website.

If you have any questions about our support services, do not hesitate to reach out to Mimi Robinson, our Student Support Coordinator, at mimirobinson@grauerschool.com.

Dr. Grauer's Latest Column

The Unwritten Core Value

Courage is the unwritten core value that Grauer students are using to get through this pandemic. Dr. Grauer reflects that he  never realized how courageous it is just to live life in joy, in smiles, in song, and in play.

Green Grauer: Our Garden Is Growing
From Stephanie Murphy and Kelle Rock, Green Grauer Gardening Leaders:

Last Week In The Garden
We continued preparing areas for Spring planting of flowers for the Monarch Way Station and Flower Garden, which will take place during the week of March 1. We also worked on sanding and painting the two garden benches and arbors, weeded, and applied the final application of dormant oil spray on the stone fruit trees.
Please remind students not to pick fruit or veggies from the garden unless they have received permission from their teacher or the Grauer Gardening team. The Valencia Orange tree (by the treehouse classroom) is losing fruit every week. However, this variety is a Summer juicing orange. The earliest this variety ripens is around early April (after Spring Break). Fruit that is picked now will be very sour. We promise to let you know when this fruit is ready for harvest. Coincidentally, a student suggestion from our survey mentioned that fresh squeezed orange juice would be nice upon arrival to school some day. We think that's a great idea and we'll keep you posted!

Coming Up In The Garden

First Thursday Holistic Healing Class on Thursday, March 4 from 9:15-10:15am. Breath is life! Life is breath! Come join us in exploring ancient breathing practices for modern times! Grauer's Annual Spelling Bee Winner and Finalists

From Paige Prindle, English Teacher:

The final rounds of the annual Grauer School Spelling Bee took place on Thursday, February 11 in the Justice Center. Eight 7th and 8th graders went seven rounds to decide who will qualify to represent Grauer at The San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee on March 17 via Zoom.

Eighth-grader Erin W. '25 (participating on Zoom) correctly spelled the word "liana" to become the 2021 Grauer School Middle School Spelling Bee Champion! Eighth-grader Khyber M. ‘25 took second place. It was an incredibly competitive Bee, with Erin and Khyber going back and forth for round after round until a winner was finally declared. This year's Bee went for an amazing 20 rounds!

Congratulations as well to the other Middle School students who participated in the Spelling Bee finals including 8th graders Finn C. '25 and Asa S. '25, and 7th graders Zoe Ba. '26, Mia B. '26, MJ C. '26, and Julien W. '26.
Theatre Department Presents Brown Bag Theatre

From Erin Langen, Theatre Teacher:

Our Period 7 Theatre Arts class produced our first Brown Bag showcase on Wednesday, February 10. Nadia L. '21 and Lourdes F. '22 have been rehearsing the one-act "Poof" by Lynn Nottage for the past two months, and they were finally able to perform during lunch for an appreciative audience on the quad outside the Justice Center. We chose this play to highlight a contemporary female playwright, as well as choosing a play that had two major roles to feature two of our most experienced actresses, Nadia and Lourdes. Click on the image with the play button below to watch a video of our Brown Bag Theatre production of "Poof", and we hope you enjoy watching it!
Pre-Calculus Class At The Beach

From Clayton Payne, Pre-Calculus Teacher

The Pre-Calculus class went on a field trip to the beach on Thursday, February 11. To evaluate the Pre-Calculus students' ability to write trigonometric equations from data (usually in the form of sterile graphs), we left the classroom and traveled down to Cardiff Reef. We observed the breaking waves, Socratically identifying how each aspect of what we were watching corresponded to the graphs we had previously made. The surfers weren't struggling with their math, but their desire to be out in the water!

The activity began with a simple question, "How would you write the equation of what we were seeing?" In mixed ability groups, students formulated strategies for collecting data while on land. These groups compared methodologies, agreeing on the best to use. As the class began collecting data, critiquing each other, I had the pleasure of sitting back and watching them ride their intellectual curiosity just as the locals were riding the waves.

We had an open critique of the data, the surfers explaining certain natural phenomenon as represented in the numbers. Once appropriate sets of data were agreed upon, students set to work writing the equation. How did they know if they were right? They used a smartphone to check the surf report, discovering that what they had calculated was just what the app was reporting. (I'm not sure who was being held more accountable, the students or the app!)

While they had to be resourceful, show perseverance, and hold each other accountable, the real success is that they found the mathematics in something they love and appreciate... while having fun!
Mandarin Chinese Students Celebrate Chinese New Year

On February 11, Mandarin Chinese students and their teacher, Fupen Huang, created a video to celebrate the Chinese New Year, the year of the Ox, with the Grauer community. Click on the image below to watch the video. Happy Chinese New Year!
World Religions Class: Creating Mandalas

As an exercise to understand the religion of Buddhism, World Religions students created Mandalas using colored sand to draw circular patterns on February 10. The mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Buddhism, representing the universe. The circular design symbolizes the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected. According to Buddhist scripture, mandalas constructed from sand transmit positive energies to the environment and to the people who view them. They are believed to effect purification and healing. Mandala sand painting was introduced by the Buddha himself and there are many different designs of mandala, each with different lessons to teach.
Surf PE Class: Surfboard Maintenance

From Brian Dugan, Surf PE Coach:

On February 10 and February 11, Period 6 and 7 Surf PE classes practiced some essential craftsmanship: board repair. After one of the biggest and most consistent runs of winter swell in memory, a few days of miniscule surf provided the perfect opportunity to fix damaged student equipment. The class learned basic safety measures and techniques for working with UV-reactive epoxy to fill and reshape fiberglass with cracks or dings. Throughout the two class periods, students repaired over 8 surfboards with varying degrees of damage. Thanks everyone for participating in the experience!
Faculty & Staff Appreciation Luncheon

A Note of Gratitude from the Grauer Parent Association:

Thank you to all Grauer Families for helping to make our teachers truly feel appreciated at the Faculty & Staff Appreciation Luncheon held on Friday, February 12. The Parent Association Board would like to send a special thank you to parent chair Yuki Mese-Gilbert for her thoughtful and creative vision on how to host a safe and special event this year. Our teachers and staff really enjoyed the individual picnic lunches & $100 Amazon gift card. Thank you to the many Grauer Families who generously donated!

We would also like to extend gratitude to Serenity Wood for her delicious truffles, Sheila Wirick for making charcuterie boards, and the Colvin, Tanghe, Melby and Leonhard Families for contributing additional snacks & beverages that were included in the picnic baskets. We also greatly appreciate Donna Spiegel, Kim Edwards and Meighan Brisbois for their planning (and sewing!) efforts.

From our teachers:
  • "I felt so spoiled today and send a huge wave of gratitude to all involved for all of their hard work. Thank you, thank you!"
  • "That picnic was so gorgeous, aesthetically and in spirit! It was so much fun and oh so delicious. Thank you to all involved!
  • "A terrific way to end the week and kick off the break. So appreciated."
  • "Thank you so much for a wonderful, so thoughtful and beautiful lunch. We have indeed the best PA and I feel very spoiled."
This indeed was a beautiful way to show appreciation for all that our teachers and staff do. Thank you for your generosity and kindness.
