Monitoring Montana Waters:
New FLBS Program to Assist Watershed Groups in Montana

There are many reasons why we consider ourselves fortunate to live and conduct research in this incredible place. Among them are the vast waters of Montana, our most important resource, that all of us enjoy. Monitoring these waters is critical, and the bio station has been conducting water quality monitoring and providing assistance to volunteer and watershed groups for over 40 years. Montana’s waters depend upon the data collected by incredible dedicated citizen scientists  and organizations across the state.  We are excited to announce our new Monitoring Montana Waters (MMW) program, because now FLBS can do more to support and assist the monitoring efforts of citizen-led watershed groups!
Funded by PlusFish Philanthropy, MMW is designed to support citizen-led water quality monitoring in Montana by providing scientific, technical and financial support to citizen science watershed groups. The overarching goal of MMW is to work with partners to help better understand and protect the world-renowned waters of Montana by generating and providing water quality data to management agencies. For more information about the program, visit our website or contact the MMW program by email at mmw@flbs.umt.edu

Virtual Science on Tap Returns:
Monday, March 1 at 6:30pm

Science on Tap is back on Monday, March 1 at 6:30pm for a virtual discussion with
Dr. Jay Evans
Director of the Center for Translational Medicine at the University of Montana

Dr. Evans will discuss current SARS-CoV-2 vaccine developments at UM and provide an update on approved COVID-19 vaccines. Evans and his research team have spent more than two decades working to improve vaccines through the use of adjuvants, which are components added to vaccines to improve the immune response. They’re also developing novel delivery systems to ensure vaccines are safely and efficiently delivered to the right cells.

Science on Tap brings you approachable science through the collaborative effort of the Flathead Lakers, Flathead Lake Biological Station, and the Flathead Lake Brewing Company. Previous Science on Tap presentations and discussions on the Science on Tap-Flathead YouTube channel

A Sound Investment:
Maintaining Clean Water has Economic Benefits

It’s always a strange and exhilarating experience to know you’ve got something valuable at your fingertips, but aren’t entirely sure how valuable it might be. Take this place, for instance. From the highest elevations of Glacier National Park to the recreational shores of our pristine lakes, and all the streams and rivers in between, the Flathead Watershed is home to some of the most breathtaking and remarkable locations in the world.

There’s no doubt that these incredible waters have a positive impact on our regional economy. A recent study conducted by FLBS environmental economist Nanette Nelson and the Whitefish Lake Institute’s Lori Curtis shows that Whitefish and Flathead Lakes contribute upwards of $3 billion in property values to the local tax base equaling $25 million in property taxes annually. So maybe the important questions are, what are the threats to our world-renowned waters, and what role do we all play in sustaining not only our breathtaking ecosystems, but also the foundation of our local economy?

Attention College Students:
Scholarships Available for #FLBS2021 Summer Classes

Well here we are, immersed in the heart of winter and the growing excitement of another summer of adventure just around the bend. While we sure are enjoying the much needed snow accumulation, we’re also busy gearing up for our summer program, for which we have over $50,000 in scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students!

Bringing students together from diverse locations and backgrounds is just one of the reasons why the learning experience at our summer session is second to none. For many of our students, a summer spent learning and researching in Northwest Montana just wouldn’t be possible without financial support. Fortunately, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our Bio Station donors, our seventeen named scholarships allow us to award scholarships to a very high percentage of applicants. This makes it possible for many students to spend their summers engaging in hands on learning while impacting real world discoveries in the Flathead Watershed!

The deadline to submit scholarship applications is March 15, 2021. Drop by our website for more information and a complete list of our classes, scholarships, and other financial aid opportunities!

Visit the FLBS Website for More Information!
Interested in Creating a Named Scholarship at FLBS in Honor of Someone Important to You?
Training students to become future scientists is a critical part of the FLBS mission. By creating a named scholarship (endowed or non-endowed), you can benefit deserving students now and in the future while honoring the legacy of someone who has made a significant impact on your life!  For more information, contact FLBS Associate Director Tom Bansak at tom.bansak@umontana.edu.
