SIS WEEKLY
深圳蛇口国际学校周报

Dear SIS Community,

We are in the midst of a busy admissions period and we are often asked "What does it mean to be an international school?"

This is a really important question to ask when a family considers whether to join our community.

Being an international school means that we understand what foreign universities are looking for in their applicants. It means that our counselors and teachers are well trained and able to prepare students for success beyond acceptance at the university.

Being an international school means that the methods of teaching are aligned to a constructivist approach. This means active learning, with reflective practice and high levels of student engagement. We know that this is good for children's development.

Being an international school means having balance between academics and activity and creativity. Our co-curricular program is just as important as the in-class curriculum in helping to inspire and develop students who can make a difference in the world.

But perhaps most of all, being an international school means being part of a truly globally connected community. Being surrounded by people from other cultures builds understandings, expands thinking, and develops broader perspectives. Our diverse community is a fundamental part of being an international school and providing an international education.

That is why I am pleased that we have offered a French Bilingual program since 2009, and why I am very pleased that we are expanding this program in 2021. I am excited that we can invite more students to be a part of the French Bilingual Program and benefit from a truly global community while learning multiple languages. French speaking communities are prominent around the world and I am proud that SIS can support the Shenzhen community with this expanded program.

Best regards

 Did you know that...

The Qingming festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English (sometimes also called Chinese Memorial Day or Ancestors' Day), is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the first day of the fifth solar term of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This makes it the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, either 4, 5 or 6 April in a given year. During Qingming, Chinese families visit the tombs of their ancestors to clean the gravesites, pray to their ancestors and make ritual offerings.
In 2021, the Qingming festival is on April 4.
