The LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine is very pleased to offer our Visiting Elective Program for URiM students, centered around our academic hospital programs – LCMC University Medical Center, New Orleans and LCMC Children’s Hospital New Orleans with our departments of Pediatrics and Orthopedics.
The elective program opportunity is open medical students who are currently attending United States accredited medical schools, and who are from groups/communities which are underrepresented in medicine.
The Application deadline is: May 14, 2021, please see that attached program flyer and application. The program is supported by our Office of Diversity & Community Engagement in concert with our Clinical GME Programs and our Dean’s Office.
Excited to add information about the Visiting Student Externship at Nationwide Children's Hospital
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, from the Class of 2022, to apply for senior elective rotations during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Students will be matched with a faculty and resident advisor during the clerkship to provide mentorship and networking opportunities for rising 4th year medical students. Students will also be connected with members of the Northwestern McGaw Underrepresented Residents and Fellows Forum.
We are providing stipends of up to $1,500 to qualified students to help defray the cost of an away rotation. We define the following groups as underrepresented for all programs: Black (African/African American), Latino/Hispanic (Mexican American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Central American, South American), Native American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Women are defined as underrepresented for: Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Plastic Surgery.
Eligibility Requirements Prospective students for the Visiting Elective Program for Students Underrepresented in Medicine:
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
Must be pursuing a medical degree at an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school.
Must be in their final year of medical school.
Must be in good standing at their medical school.
Must have completed all core clerkships in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Surgery.
Must apply to rotate up to and including Block 20. Block 21 students may be considered pending available funds. Block 22 and all blocks afterwards are not eligible for the stipend.

The program participant will receive a $4,000 stipend. This will be used to cover the cost of travel, housing and any registrar fees that exceed $500.

This is a two-day virtual seminar.
AAMC statement on gender-affirming health care for transgender youth
David J. Skorton, MD, AAMC president and CEO, issued a statement about the importance of allowing doctors to provide gender-affirming care to transgender youth. “The AAMC is committed to ensuring access to high-quality care that treats all people, including transgender individuals, equally and with respect, and providing training to physicians and other health care professionals that is consistent with those values.”
New episode of “Beyond the White Coat” podcast focuses on increasing Black men in medicine
Despite efforts by medical schools, foundations, and the government to increase diversity in the physician pipeline, the number of Black men in medicine has remained virtually stagnant since 1978. This stagnation has serious implications for patient care, since a wealth of research has shown that Black patients receive more effective care from Black doctors. The latest episode of “Beyond the White Coat: Making the Rounds” explores the issues at the root of this crisis and discuss how some organizations are meeting the challenge.

Article explores impact of measuring social determinants of health
An article published this week in Health Affairs, co-authored by the AAMC, shows that social determinants of health measured at smaller geographic levels may help remove unjustified Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program penalties for hospitals serving the most marginalized patients.
The AAMC launched a new website for students and residents on April 7. The redesign is the result of extensive user research and website data analysis, including input from premeds and medical students. The site still has the same overall structure, but it now looks more like the AAMC’s other websites. It’s easier to navigate, remains mobile-friendly, and maintains the features and content our learners find most valuable. Additionally, site visitors will be able to find resources more easily thanks to an improved search tool, and the new search function will continue to improve as we learn what topics and resources site visitors look for most.
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is accepting proposals for sessions or posters for its 2021 conference, which will take place virtually Sept. 28-29. The submission deadline is April 25.
