Dear Friend,
I can't believe it's almost the Winter Solstice, one of my favorite days of the year (read to the end, and I will tell you why)! As the light wanes and I reflect on the past year, I realize it has been full and invigorating, yet exhausting at times. I hope you have had a wonderful year as well. Our lives are ever-changing and all so different. I would love to hear your stories of the year!
The year's first half was intensely focused on creating work for two solo exhibitions and all the related work. I'd like to invite you to join me on a visual journey through my year.

Here are a few images from my solo installation, Inhale/Exhale, Until the Last Breath, in No. 5 gallery at Abel Contemporary last Spring. The show included paintings, sculptural installations, and a video projection (watch here). Monochrome elements are a somber contemplation of the impact of the changing climate on forests. In contrast, the saturated colors in the paintings reflect the duality of our contemporary existence, expressing the exuberance we can feel in nature - and reminding us of the value of the natural world.

The afternoon light at the Center for Visual Arts in Wausau, Wisconsin, was magical last summer. Entanglements, the central installation, and the paintings in this solo exhibition, Water Shields & Damselflies, were luminous.

The past few months have been filled with a variety of work in my studio. I'm painting and working out some new ideas, finished a commission inspired by earlier work, and some experiments for new installations and other works.

Autumn Sun, White Ash (artist crayon on archival Tyvek, 40 x 40 inches), a commissioned piece, was a significant focus this fall as I worked with hundreds of ash leaves to create this circular composition. Inspired by my Respirations series, this work considers photosynthesis, carbon reduction, and other gifts the forests generously provide. If you are dreaming of a new piece of art for your home, let's be in touch!

What's happening in my studio right now? I'm working out a lot of new ideas and materials for installations, and experimenting with ideas for new paintings. All of this work examines the ways that forests and watersheds are entwined through the water cycle. Below are detail images of works in progress. Follow their progress weekly on Instagram! The journey continues.

Thanks for reading the text and images to the end! Why is the Winter Solstice my favorite day of the year? It reminds me of our common humanity and history that goes back millennia as early humans prayed for the sun to return, studied the skies, and learned to predict time and earth's relationship to the sun and stars. It's a time of celebration across many cultures in our uniquely human ways, centered around this special time of year when the day after the solstice, the sun continues its cycle, relighting our lives. Blessings to each of you as your personal journey on this planet traveling around the sun continues.
