Barolo and Barbaresco 1982-2004
Prime Vintages
Well-cellared, well-priced, ready to go!
As many of our customers have noticed, we have found a rich vein of super-mature wines from the 50s, 60s and 70s from well-connected Piemontese suppliers on the ground in Northern Italy. We have had great success and established a ready market for these wines, but they are not always to everyone's taste. Some clients insist on asking, 'can you get me anything a bit younger, from the 80s or 90s?

This offer is in response to all of you that need that more vigorous and energetic Nebbiolo kick.

We have made particular effort to mine our loyal local consignor's cellars for Barolo and Barbaresco from this period. We feel that an offer of 60 wines should present opportunities to scratch that itch.

Vintages
The 'modern age' in Barolo (and Barbaresco) started in the 80s, the first great vintage any had to play with was '82. The other notables in that period were '85, '89 and '90. All were magnificent in their way. Though the '88s and many '86s and '83s are still doing well.

Like Bordeaux, this purple patch was followed by a string of difficult years, and while 1995 produced good wines, Piedmont experienced an unprecedented string of six excellent or outstanding vintages in the following years from 1996 through 2001. In shorthand, the easy way to remember them is as a symmetrical 'bookshelf.'

The solid years are at the end, 1996 and 2001, and they will live on in memory forever as magnificent Piedmont vintages, as good as any. Inside these, at either end, are two soft and ripe years, 1997 and 2000. They heralded the style of many more vintages that have followed, super-ripe fruity wines that are high-octane but relatively drinkable, with Nebbiolo's tough structure more than matched by ripe fruit. These two vintages are at their peak.

Finally, in the middle of the shelf, we have 1998 and 1999. While they are far from identical, these two years share the merit of combining classic Nebbiolo structure with accessibility. 1999 may have a little more power but it can still be thought of as an 'all-rounder' as is 1998. These vintages are both drinking very well now but in a more restrained and classic style than the riper years that immediately preceded and followed them.

As a decade earlier, lean years followed this purple patch. The next strong vintage was 2004. It is a classic and many wines require time but those from the 'Modernists' are drinking well, so to are the softer vineyards of the 'Traditionalists' from the communes of Barolo, La Morra and the lower altitude or more Northern sites in Barbaresco.

Prices, Value and Fashion
We could bang-on but Piedmont continues to provide tremendous value at every price level (and our prices, as ever will be about the best you will find.) Whether it is comparing the blue chips like Giacosa, Gaja or Sandone, with Jayer, Rousseau and Arnoux-Lachaux... or with Petrus, Latour and Pavie... or Screaming Eagle, Harlan and Sine qua Non... or anywhere on down the line, Piedmont compares very well for style and quality at every price.

Despite a steady escalation that really started with the 2010 vintage, Piedmont has not 'caught-fire' like other areas, it seems somehow, to always just miss the boat on each round of fashion. This is just one reason we love it so much.
