Mature Vintage Port
Oft' forgotten, but oh, so good!
When something truly classic goes out of fashion, it is only a matter time before it becomes high fashion again. Vintage Port is such a classic, and should be beyond fashion, but fashion determines demand and demand determines price, so this is our gain.

In a world where prices for the luxury domaines are out of sight, the very best Vintage Ports have barely moved in a decade or more while the mature vintages have only got better in bottle.

There's no rationale for not making room for Port. It drinks well solo, or with a variety of foods, and is often the best drink to finish a meal when nothing else will work.

Now that 13.5-15% wines are common, a three-quarter pour of Port presents no more of an obstacle to those of us who are careful, and a well-stoppered open bottle will keep perfectly well for a week or more... so, don't shut down the vista; port offers true wine lovers an entirely different and wonderful dimension.

The bottles in this offer have been impeccably stored and are in stock and available now.
Fonseca 1960

$195 per bottle

Graham's 1970
2 bottles available,
$195 per bottle
93 points Robert Parker: "Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage. It begs to be drunk now, although it will last for at least another two decades."

Fonseca 1970
1 bottle available,
$245 per bottle
95 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. The bouquet opens beautifully with heady scents of clove, ginger, small red cherries, bergamot and allspice, displaying exquisite definition and harmony. The palate follows suit with lovely balance and poise in the mouth, notes of kirsch, shaved ginger and walnut building to an opulent, viscous finish that lacquers the mouth. Yet this bottle shows more control than the bottle tasted four years ago. The 1970 Fonseca is in a very nice place at the moment. You should join it. Tasted May 2013."

Taylor's 1970
1 bottle available,
$229 per bottle
96 points Robert Parker: "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1970 fabulous, a broodingly dense-colored, backward port that has all the signs of future greatness, provided one is willing to cellar it until the early 1990s."

Smith Woodhouse 1977
5 bottles available,
$99 per bottle

Taylor's 1994
4 bottles available,
$160 per bottle
97 points Robert Parker: "When tasting young vintage ports, Taylor is always the most backward. Yet potentially, it has the capability to be the most majestic. This classically made, opaque purple-colored wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length. It is a young, rich, powerful Taylor that will require 10-15 years of aging. Compared to the more flashy, forward style of the 1992, the 1994 has more in common with such vintages as 1977 and 1970. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2045."

Taylor's 1997
4 bottles available,
$75 per bottle
96 points Wine Advocate: "Saturated black/purple-colored, with stunning aromatics of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, and iron, this spectacular vintage port is one of the stars of the vintage. Extremely full-bodied, with silky tannin, spectacular concentration and purity, multiple flavor levels, and an evolved, forward personality, this is an exquisite yet precocious 1997 vintage port. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030."

Taylor's 2000
1 bottle available,
$75 per bottle
98 points Wine Advocate: "Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor's 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040."

Graham's 2003
5 bottles available,
$75 per bottle
95 points Wine Advocate: "Violets, roses, spices, and candied dark fruits emanate from the glass of the murky black/purple colored 2003 Graham Vintage Port. After four days of air, this wine’s aromatics sweetened further, displaying jammy blackberry and blueberry scents. Bold, full-bodied, and expansive, the Graham benefited the most from extensive contact with air of all the 2003s tasted for this report. This opulently jammy wine assaults the palate with powerful yet soft layers of oily, candied red fruits as well as notes of tar and hints of mocha. A highly concentrated effort, it is creamy textured, suave, and reveals an admirably long finish filled with additional layers of dark fruits intermingled with spices. Projected maturity: 2030-2055."
