Report Warns of Zoonotic Disease Risk from Animal Industries

A new 15-country study by Harvard Law School and New York University documents the scope of risks posed by animal markets and industries and calls for better regulation to prevent future disease outbreaks.

We are proud to contribute our photojournalism of animal industries to this critical body of research. Special thanks to Ann Linder of Harvard Law School for her thoughtful testimonial:

"The images we were able to use from We Animals Media allowed us to bring our research to life in vivid color. They brought a power, depth, and dimensionality to our work and breathed so much life into the text. Their images elevate our work and make real the tensions, problems, and challenges that we try to document through our research."

“Chat with a Vegan” Features Jo-Anne McArthur

"Images are a really powerful way to advocate for animals. It’s easier to engage someone in a split second with a poignant image, even if it’s a difficult image that will grab people and lead them to the text, lead them to the information that you want them to know."

Our founder Jo-Anne McArthur spoke with Vancouver Humane Society's #PlantUniversity about her vegan journey and the power of images to create change.

This Month's Featured Image

Jordan Rivers / We Animals Media
Jordan Rivers captured this month's featured image, which portrays a bull peering through the bars of a bucking chute just moments before being thrust into a rodeo bull riding event. What excites us about this photograph is that it offers an alternative point of view to the dominant narratives about rodeos. The image gives us space for an emotional, and perhaps even an ideological, shift as we imagine the event from the animal's perspective.

Photography can evoke critical questions. For instance, should pitting a subjugated animal against a dominant force be considered entertainment? We say no. #SayNoToRodeo

ICYMI: Paul Watson Arrested

Captain Paul Watson aboard the Steve Irwin. Antarctica. Jo-Anne McArthur / Sea Shepherd / We Animals Media

Paul Watson, the prominent anti-whaling activist, was arrested in Greenland in July 2024 under a Japanese warrant related to his 2010 anti-whaling activities. Japan is seeking his extradition, which could lead to a 15-year prison sentence. Supporters, including French President Emmanuel Macron, argue the charges are politically motivated and are campaigning for his release.

Our founder Jo-Anne McArthur has worked closely with Watson and supports his unparalleled efforts to protect marine life. You can sign a petition asking for his release here.
