WHS GIRLS SOCCER ARE 12-0!!

The Lady Spartans earned their 12th win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Bellbrook at home Thursday night.  The shut-out was senior goalkeeper Gracyn Armstrong's 8th of the season.  Armstrong made seven nice saves in the game and was well-supported by the defensive efforts of the team led by defenders Laine Kuhns, Emme Greely, Lynsie Kuhns, Kendall Erbach, Alyza Camp, Katie Dick, Kayann Whitt, and Aleigha Post.  Greely scored the first goal of the game by heading in Allie Freese's corner kick, which gave the Lady Spartans a 1-0 lead at half.  Waynesville then scored 3 goals in a 4-minute span of time in the second half.  Kyla Harvey put one far-post past the Bellbrook keeper off of a pass from Sam Erbach.  Erbach then scored 2 of her own off of assists from Freese and Brooke Woody.  The win over Bellbrook followed a 1-0 victory at Cincinnati Country Day in a rematch of last year's Regional Semifinal game.  Freese scored the lone goal for Waynesville off of a cross from Woody.  The Lady Spartans play their next game on Monday at Alter followed by their final home game of the regular season against Greenview on Tuesday.  Tuesday's game will also be Senior Night, and we will recognize our seniors at 5:15 pm before the game kicks off at 5:30 pm.  The Seniors have requested that Tuesday's game also be a "Pink-Out" to recognize those fans who are fighting or have beaten any type of cancer.  Please come out and show your support on Tuesday at 5:15 pm!

The JV put together 2 solid wins this week as well with a 2-1 win over Cincinnati Country Day and a 2-1 win over Bellbrook.  Avery Whitaker scored first against CCD with a shot over the keeper's head into the far netting.  CCD countered with a goal of their own to tie the game up before Abigail Foley scored off of Addy Harrison's assist.  Against Bellbrook, the Lady Spartans fell behind early in the 1st half but countered with a brilliant 2nd half where they dominated possession.  Lilly Hart tied the game up when she finished Harrison's corner kick.  Then, Claire Tussey scored the go-ahead goal off of Hart's assist.  The JV also takes on Alter next Monday at 5 pm.

Football

Last Friday the Spartans looked to fly away with the win against the Bellbrook Golden Eagles. Last Friday’s game was hard fought with the Spartans trailing early in the first. Bellbrook certainly proved to be a worthy adversary for the Spartans challenging nearly every amazing play of ours with one of their very own. In the end the sheer will of the Golden Eagles had toppled the Spartans resulting in a 29-43 on the road.

Thank you Cheerleaders for cheering on our teams!

Boys Soccer

Thursday evening the Boys soccer team tussled with Bellbrook in the Golden Eagles’ own nest. The Spartans played an extremely entertaining and well-played game against the Golden Eagles who had been favored to win. The Spartans surpassed expectations and fought for every inch on the field and would play brilliantly offensively netting two goals from senior Zach Strong and freshman Nick Feldhaus respectively. Defensively, the Spartans held fast against Bellbrook only allowing one goal on 10 shots. The Spartans would come away with a 2-1 victory over Bellbrook in a truly exhilarating game.

Volleyball
On Tuesday evening, the Lady Spartans volleyball team went toe to toe against the Bellbrook Golden Eagles at home. The Lady Spartans played an extremely challenging opponent in that of the Golden Eagles with extremely contested sets throughout the match. The Spartans had lost the initial set, however they had come back to win the second. This would be short lived however as the Spartans fell to Bellbrook in the remaining two sets. The match would end in an unfortunate Spartan loss with scores of 25-19, 11-25, 25-18, 25-16.

On Wednesday, the Spartans volleyball team did battle with the Alter Knights at home. The Lady Spartans played extremely a very closely contested match regardless of what the box score shows. The Spartans lost the opening two sets and later came back to win the third, unfortunately this would not be enough succumbing to Alter in the fourth and final set. The final scores would be 25-19, 25-17, 15-25, 25-21 which would result in a stinging Spartan loss.

On Thursday evening, the Lady Spartans were set to face the Middletown Madison Mohawks at home. This game was an amazing change of pace coming off the two losses earlier in the week. The Lady Spartans came out to win from first serve, dominating consistently for the entirety of the game, ending it in the minimum three sets. The final scores of the match were 25-12, 25-13, 25-11 resulting in a much needed Spartans win.

Tennis

The Lady Spartans tennis team took part in their League tournament. The Spartans came to play winning matches against Valley View and higher seeded Bellbrook and Oakwood players. For their spectacular efforts, the Lady Spartans placed third overall. Next week the tennis team goes to sectionals at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Good job and good luck Lady Spartans!!!

Cross Country

This past weekend the cross country teams ran at the Neal Charske-Fairmont Firebird Invitational.  The boys team placed first with Jonas King taking 1st place overall.  The girls placed third overall with Lily Hart taking 4th place.

Girls and Boys Golf
Both the girls and boys teams finished their season strong this past week. The girls competed at Beechwood golf course in the first ever SWBL Conference Golf Tournament.  They ended up in 5th place overall.  The boys also competed at Beechwood for league and placed 4th in the league.  Both teams also went on to compete at Sectionals this week.  Top finishers for the girls were Raegan Vogel who tied for 18th and Amanda Tudela who tied for 23rd overall.  The girls team finished their season in 7th place at sectionals.  The boys golfed at Pipestone yesterday for their run at sectionals.  As a team they finished 7th overall.  Top finishers for the team were Evan Barrett in 20th and Robbie Myers tied in 22nd.

ATHLETIC SCHEDULE
9/30/2022 THROUGH 10/08/2022

BE A RAINBOW IN SOMEONE'S CLOUD!
First and second grade students created collage rainbows to start out the school year.  They used old projects, scraps, spangles, stickers, foam shapes, and pom-poms to create a unique design in rainbow form.  Students were inspired by the quote “Be a rainbow in someone’s cloud” from the poet, Maya Angelou.

PIANO DONATION
The above baby grand piano was graciously donated to our Elementary and Performing Arts Center by Kathy Dubbs, Aunt of Pat Dubbs, the former Superintendent of Wayne Local Schools.   We are very grateful for this beautiful piano; it will be a great addition to our district!
Thank you, Mrs. Dubbs!

TEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MARY L. COOK LIBRARY

FAFSA Information Meeting– Seniors & Parents
OCTOBER 6, 2022

Thinking about college? Then it is time to learn about FAFSA!

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  WHS will be holding an Informational Meeting on October 6, 2022 (Thursday) at 5:30 PM.   A representative will lead this meeting from Wright State University Financial Aid & Admissions team. They will share valuable information to help you understand the why and how for FAFSA.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the primary form that the federal government, states and colleges use to award grants, scholarships, work study and student loans. Even if you think you do not qualify for financial aid it is still important to complete the process because some financial aid programs require a FAFSA even though they award aid without regard to family income and it may automatically qualify a student for low-interest federal student loans.  Lastly, filing a FAFSA can actually help a student gain admission to a college because it allows the admission officers to know the student most definitely wants to attend the college. FAFSA window opens on Oct. 1. And it is important to file your FAFSA as close to Oct. 1 as possible to improve your chances of qualifying for the most grant, scholarship and work-study aid.

This school year, the Jr./Sr. High is trying to make sure that our wonderful students are recognized for their Spartan pride, respect, responsibility, and kindness. In doing so, teachers will recognize students through “Spartan Star Cards.”  When students earn a card, they will be in the running to win various incentives.  We need the help from our Spartan community in getting incentives for our students. If you own a local business and can provide our school with “free item” coupons or if you are part of our Spartan family and are able to donate any $5 gift cards, candy, or snacks for our students, we would greatly appreciate it.  Larger donations for our quarterly rewards would also be something that would be a huge help to us.  Any donations can be dropped off in the Main Office. Thank you for all of the support that you provide for our students.
