Exciting new partnership!

We are always looking for new ways to provide our researchers with options to enhance their research and opportunities. One of these ways is by partnering with external organizations to create a mutually beneficial relationship. Currently, we are working with BioBoost Synbio to further their efforts in creating a unique system to produce antimicrobial peptides and other AMR relevant molecules using their sustainable biosynthesis platform. There is a high potential for this platform to be applied towards AMR and research in the One Health scope. BioBoost Synbio is looking for collaborators in the AMR space to advance the applications of their product. Please click here to learn more. If you are interested in a collaboration, please contact Mingyang Sun, President & CEO, at ming@bioboostsynbio.com.

Chancellors Forum on Food for the Future

Chancellors Forum on Food for the Future
Ellen Goddard

On November 9th, the University of Alberta hosted the Chancellor's Forum on Food for the Future, specifically focusing on climate, cost and creating security. A diverse and highly knowledgeable panel included Consortium PI, Dr. Ellen Goddard, who gave a much-needed economic perspective to the panel discussion. Dr. Goddard discussed the importance of consumer perceptions in food and gave her insights on what we will have access to food-wise in 30 years. Overall, the discussion provided a well-balanced outlook on the importance of the outputs of agricultural research, and how it can be developed in an inclusive manner going forward to support the ever-growing population with healthy, sustainable food options. Making the case for One Health

Making the case for One Health
Herman Barkema

This newly released article in University Affairs provides an excellent overview of One Health and how the approach is gaining traction in teaching and research. Although many Canadian universities are launching new programs and specializations focusing on One Health, Dr. Herman Barkema speaks to how the field is still struggling against institutional silos. Click here to read the full article.

Colonic innate immune defenses and microbiota alterations in acute swine dysentery

Cristina C Fodor, Janelle Fouhse, Dominique Drouin, Tao Ma, Benjamin P Willing, Leluo L Guan, Eduardo R Cobo

Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, an etiologic agent of swine dysentery (SD), is known for causing colitis. Although some aspects of colonic defenses during infection have been described previously, a more comprehensive picture of the host and microbiota interaction in clinically affected animals is required. This study aimed to characterize multiple aspects of colonic innate defenses and microbiome factors in B. hyodysenteriae-infected pigs that accompany clinical presentation of hemorrhagic diarrhea.  Click here to read the full publication.
