EU Unequal Pay Day: PES Women and ZIJkant's 2022 campaign highlights men's role in closing the gender pay gap
15 November 2022
Equal pay for women and men is still not a reality in Europe. This is why the women’s organization of the Party of European Socialists, PES Women, teams up every year with their Flemish member organization ZIJkant to organizeEUUnequal Pay Day, a symbolic day to make aware that women effectively start working for free until the end of the year.

In 2022, we mark European Unequal Pay Day on 15 November. The European Unequal Pay Day is a symbolic day to raise awareness on the fact that female workers in Europe still earn on average 13% less than men. Read all about Unequal Pay Day, a symbolic day with real life implications, here.

PES Women congratulates PES newly elected President Stefan Löfven. PES Women President Zita Gurmai and Vice-President Elke Ferner voted on behalf of PES Women during the PES Congress. The new PES leadership also includes PES First Vice-President Iratxe Garcia Perez and PES Executive Vice-President Katarina Barley. The PES Statues foresee compulsory gender balance in its  leadership. Congratulations to the whole team!

PES President Löfven's first speech at the PES Congress put a focus on gender equality. As a feminist, he warned that the raise of the far-right puts womens' rights at stake: rights, conditions, participation deteriorate. “The fight for women's rights is a fight for human rights & the right to abortion must be a fundamental right!”

In November, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation (FES) in Brussels organised a meeting between PES Women Secretariat and Turkish sister parties and civil society organisations, where we had the opportunity to discuss the situation in Turkey since the government's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention. There is a need for more actions to tackle gender-based violence, and to support women in politics and democratic structures. PES Women fully supports this common fight.
