AMR: A One Health Approach Seminar Series
We have officially completed our 4th installment of the AMR: A One Health approach seminar series! This year we explored over 20 topics related to AMR in humans, agriculture, wildlife, companion animals and the environment, and even covered policy, social behaviors, and economics. We had participation from over 200 people in 52 countries, with varying backgrounds in academia, industry, and government, and ended our series with a compelling panel discussion from experts in the main subject fields. Thank you to our participants for making this year so enjoyable, and we look forward to educating on AMR with a One Health perspective again next year!

WHO partners with Canadian company, Firstline, to deliver global antimicrobial guidance

For the first time, the WHO has created evidence-based clinical guidance for prescribing antibiotics - the AWaRe Antibiotic Book. The guidance is now available on Firstline, free of charge in all countries. The partnership creates an historic opportunity to improve antibiotic prescribing, reduce antimicrobial resistance, and save millions of lives. Click here to read the press release.
"The AMR - One Health Consortium, funded by the Major Innovation Fund (MIF) program of the Alberta Ministry of JEI, and with partially matched funding from CIHR invested in Firstline’s underlying technology to enable implementation of the AWaRe classification in point-of-care stewardship guidance. A multidisciplinary team led by Dr John Conly worked with Firstline to define and design the implementation of AWaRe classification with a view to implementation in animal health guidance."

Alberta’s health-care problems decades in the making

Dr. Lorian Hardcastle, associate professor in the faculty of law and Cumming School of Medicine at UCalgary says, "the pandemic has brought into “sharp focus” areas of weakness in the health-care system." Agri-Food and Bioindustrial Innovation Program (ABIP)
The ABIP program aims to support the development and advancement of technologies that increase productivity, enhance competitiveness, boost the value of agriculture and forestry commodities, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The Program provides up to $500K per project and up to 75% of total project costs, with the remaining funding (cash or in-kind) coming from the applicant, project partners or other funding agencies. CIHR: Evaluation of population-level interventions to reduce AMR
This funding opportunity will support projects evaluating domestic or international population-level interventions to reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use and prevent the spread of resistant pathogens in humans, animals and the environment. Projects focused on animal or environmental health must include a human health component and demonstrate the impacts on human health. AMR diagnostics and surveillance 2023
The call Development of innovative strategies, tools, technologies, and methods for diagnostics and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance will involve 21 funders from 18 countries. The total estimated call budget is about 18.8 M Euro. The results of the funded projects should contribute to improved understanding, monitoring, detection and mitigation of infection and AMR, or optimisation of antimicrobial use where efforts to curb AMR will have a global impact on human, animal and plant health and food safety and security.
