Research explores how fungi become drug-resistant
Daniel Charlebois
Researchers are investigating how disease-causing fungi become resistant to antifungal drugs to help prevent potentially devastating consequences of the growing resistance harmful microbes are developing to drugs. Dr. Charlebois co-authored a study that showed when both genetically and non-genetically resistant cells are present, it takes longer for the population of cells to become fully genetically resistant because the two types of cells are competing for resources such as nutrients and space. Microbiota is created during childbirth, not during gestation, study finds
Michael Gaenzle & Laura Sycuro
A meta-analysis of four microbiota studies concludes that bacterial colonization of the baby's digestive system occurs during delivery and not during gestation, thus refuting the existence of a fetal gut microbiota. UofA microbiologist Michael Gaenzle believes that in light of this conclusion, microbiota research needs to change direction. Click here to read the full article.

Clostridioides difficile near patient testing versus centralized testing: A pragmatic cluster randomized cross-over trial
Cody P. Doolan, Babak Sahragard, Jenine Leal, Anuj Sharma, Joseph Kim, Eldon Spackman, Aidan Hollis, Dylan R. Pillai
Management of suspected C. difficile infections (CDI) in the hospital setting typically results in patient isolation, laboratory testing, infection control, and presumptive treatment. This study investigated whether implementation of rapid near patient testing (NPT) reduced patient isolation time, hospital length of stay, antibiotic usage, and cost.
