OLD PUEBLO HAPPENINGS/MARCH 2023

PILGRIMS GET READY, March is filled with possibilities!

Now that we have people emerging, ready, willing, and able to volunteer in leading various events for our chapter, we are going to have more variety; there will be more to choose from. We hope you will come out and join in whatever appeals to you...GO FOR IT! We will let you know which are the challenging hikes, easy hikes, and we will do more sauntering. If anyone is interested in leading an activity or has a suggestion for one, please let us know.

And remember, we are always happy to receive contributions for our Newsletter; a Camino related story, a poem, some pertinent information about Camino, live updates from your walk...it's all good!

The one thing we don't do is advertise peoples books. if you have written a book, you are  welcome to join us at any of our events and tell us about it. As for book club consideration, it must be available in the library.

INSIGHTS, INFO, & STORIES FROM PILGRIMS

At our previous “Coffee,” our fellow pilgrim, Rand, told us about an exhibit at the University of Arizona Museum of Art..."THE ALTARPIECE FROM CIUDAD RODRIGO."

A group went to the museum to see the collection. Below is the link where you can listen to the commentary. You might want to sit down and relax in your favorite spot, this video is almost 1 hour in length, or, perhaps go see it; the museum is free the first Thursday of each month from 5p-8p; it is closed Mondays.

LESSON ABOUT TRAINING FOR CAMINO...from Mary

“Pack weight was 16lb which I was unaware of until I got home and weighed it. Probably better that I didn’t know, LOL…I’m a believer!”

“Yesterday I walked 7 miles, including Tumamoc, with my weighted pack. W/O a weighted pack the distance/terrain would not have been an issue. Post training the soles of my feet were sore, and this morning my legs are sore."

"My lesson learned…train with your weighted pack!”

A STORY ABOUT RETURNING... from Anna

“Upon coming home, I never wanted to talk about the Camino again!! The trip had its pros and cons, as they all do, but the cons were winning out."

"After a couple of months, my heart softened and I started to accept the Camino that was. This collage is a collection of items I held as inspiration leading up to my walk, some fav pics, as well as gifts I collected along the way."

"It serves as a visual reminder that the Camino, like life, never promises perfection, but there's so much beauty if you choose to focus on it. For those interested, you can see a highlight of my trip by checking out the hashtag #12DaysofCamino on Facebook.”

"A GIFT OF LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE OF A JOURNEY"..from Leonard

"Several months ago, our good friend, Pilgrim, active member of the OP chapter, and former leader up the famous Tumamoc Hill, showed some of us a sketching done by his daughter, Kim; it is a depiction of their route, as they traveled together along the Camino…"

“In the summer of 2019, my daughter and I set out from St. Jean Pied de Port to walk the Camino de Santiago.  Kim and I bonded together through the pain, tears and beauty that are characteristic of that six week journey, but we returned wiser, closer, and more patient. In the fall, however, she returned to university for her sophomore year. Six months later, the world stopped.”

“A year and a half passed in quarantine, our daughter thousands of miles away, but on Christmas Day 2021, she returned to us, and I received under the tree a stunning hand drawn map. Over a month of evenings, Kim had laboriously recreated northern Spain with a fountain pen and parchment.  A small dotted line shows every night’s stop on the 800 kilometers we walked through that midsummer heat, complete with rivers, forests and plains. If you look carefully, around the border, you can even see in incredibly small script, the words from the choir piece “Path of Miracles” by Jody Talbot.”

“I will keep this.”

Monthly Hike "Sweetwater Trail
Monthly Hike - Sweetwater Trail (West Side)
Saturday, March 18 @ 7:30a

There’s nothing sweeter than wildflowers in the desert, and that is what we’ll be exploring on our March 18th hike on the Sweetwater Trail. Located at the end of Camino Del Cerro Road, in the Tucson Mountains, this 6.8 mile, out and back, hike will have about a 950 ft elevation gain on its way to the saddle below Wasson Peak.
The trail starts off going downhill, and you will dip into and out of several washes along the way, with stone steps conveniently installed on the down slopes. But fear not, you’ll be trending generally uphill. At 3.4 miles, we’ll meet the King Canyon Trail which comes up from the south from Kinney Road near the Desert Museum. This is our snack and turn around point, unless you would like to follow the steep switchbacks up 0.9 miles to the Hugh Norris Trail, then another 0.3 miles to the summit of Wasson Peak. Janis Findlay will be leading this hike and Sharon Fields will also be on the trail, so, fear not, the group can be divided according to preference of either turning back or proceeding to do the more challenging section.

From Campbell and Speedway, head west for 2.3 miles, then turn right onto the freeway and take I-10 West until you get to the El Camino Del Cerro/Ruthrauff Rd exit.Take Camino Del Cerro until it dead ends at the trailhead parking lot. Don’t be fooled by the sign at Tortolita Rd that says Sweetwater Trail. That’s actually for the Sweetwater Reserve.

Annual Breakfast Potluck
ANNUAL SPRING "POTLUCK" BREAKFAST IN SABINO CANYON w SHELL CEREMONY & CAMINO 101
Sunday, March 19, 9a-12 Noon...

This event packs a lot of punch!

For those embarking on their first Camino, it is an opportunity for you to receive the traditional shell, carried by all Pilgrims walking "The Camino." The ceremony is humbling, heartfelt, and soulful.

Foster will do his, now traditional, Camino 101, and give you lots of insight and suggestions about what to take and how to pack for your journey.

And, if you are walking your, first ever, Camino this year and would like to receive a shell, let us know by the deadline, March 5. The brochure, with recipients names, will be going to print on March 6.

Starting from the first Ramada (off the parking lot) walk up the tramway approximately .05 mile. Keep a look out as there will be a sign on the left for CACTUS PICNIC AREA; (you will see our Camino flag waving)...turn left and walk down the dirt road until you come to the ramada.

We hope to see you there!
