Dear Friend,

Every day, as I reflect on Book Harvest’s vision of books for every child, support for every parent, and literacy for every community, I ask myself: where we are not showing up with books and support for children and families?
One of those places - until now – was Native American communities.
Last week, we collaborated with Coharie Intra-Tribal Council, Inc. to launch a new Book Harvest Book Hub at the Coharie Tribal Center in Clinton, NC.
After just one meeting, we jumped at the opportunity to install a Book Harvest Book Hub at the Coharie Tribal Center, thrilled by the prospect of another child discovering their new favorite book! We left over 500 books to ensure that children visiting the Center can harvest books and build home libraries of books they can read again and again and keep forever. We will return and restock just as soon as more books are needed.
I am inspired by this budding partnership and deeply grateful to the staff of Coharie Intra-Tribal Council, Inc. for their enthusiasm, collaborative spirit, and passionate commitment to nourishing their children’s love of reading.

P.S. I was fascinated to learn that North Carolina has the largest American Indian population east of the Mississippi, at more than 176,000. The Coharie Tribe has 3,000+ members in Harnett and Sampson Counties. We hope that this new partnership will help us understand how we can best support other American Indian communities in North Carolina with books. Take a look at this map from the NC Commission of Indian Affairs showing NC tribal and urban communities across North Carolina:
