Mine Blast Kills 11
An explosion throughout a series of coal mines in the rural Colombian town of Sutatausa killed 11 people and left 10 others missing. The blast was triggered by a buildup of methane gas that was ignited by a spark from a worker's tool. The resulting powerful chain blast affected five mines interconnected by tunnels. Coal and gold mine explosions are common in Colombia, where illegal mining operations are prevalent and proper safety measures are often not followed. Search and rescue efforts for survivors is ongoing, with the government of the Cundinamarca province, a team of 100 firefighters, and other rescue workers working to locate the trapped miners.

Russian Jets Near NATO Airspace
Two Russian military aircrafts flying over the Baltic Sea were intercepted by NATO jets only a few hours after the incident in the Black Sea where Russian jets allegedly downed an American drone. Typhoon fighter jets from Germany and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force were scrambled into flight when a Russian Il-78 Midas refueling plane, flying from St. Petersburg to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, failed to respond to Estonian air traffic control. After escorting the Midas, the jets were then directed to intercept an Antonov 148 military transport plane which had also veered close to Estonian airspace. Germany and the UK have been giving increasing attention to Russian activity on NATO's eastern edge, which includes the Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - all of which were formerly controlled by Russia as member states of the Soviet Union.

Evacuations across California
An 11th "atmospheric river," a narrow, river-like formation of intensely concentrated moisture in the sky, struck California on Tuesday, causing 16 major rivers to overflow and putting nearly 27,000 people under evacuation orders. Across Northern California, 70 mph (113 km/h) winds blew out windows and pushed down numerous trees, and 330,000 utility customers were left without power. Governor Newsom visited the Pajaro River where a broken levee on Friday was again overwhelmed, submerging the entire town of Pajaro and forcing thousands of residents to flee. Atmospheric rivers drop heavy rains that cause flooding and landslides. Despite the destruction, these storms have brought the end of water restrictions for nearly 7 million residents in California.

Q: What Central Asian landlocked country is over 90 percent mountainous?

A: Tajikistan
Located between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and China, Tajikistan is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including the Kunlun, Himalayan, Tienshen, and Pamir mountain ranges. Over half of the country’s elevation is above 10,000 ft (3,050 m), and the altitudes range from 1,000 feet high to 25,000 ft (305 - 7,620 m). Tajikistan’s highest peak is the Ismoil Somoni peak reaching 24,590 ft (7,495 m). The extensive mountain ranges throughout the country are cut by hundreds of canyons and gorges, where large river valleys hold the majority of the country’s population. The Fergana Valley, known for being the most densely populated region in Central Asia, is a long valley stretching between the Kuramin Range and the Turkestan Range. Rivers feed the valleys with rich soil deposits, which create a series of fertile oases that are prime for agriculture.
