UCalgary-Led Team Helps Develop App To Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance
Kathy McCoy & Jared Schlechte
Twenty to 50 per cent of all critically ill patients contract potentially deadly infections during their stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) or in hospital after being in the ICU — markedly increasing the risk of death. Now, a two-year study conducted by a Snyder Institute team has found that the high rates of infection in critically ill patients are linked with abnormalities of the microbiome, or human gut, in conjunction with an impaired immune system. Dysbiosis of a microbiota–immune metasystem in critical illness is associated with nosocomial infections
Jared Schlechte, Amanda Z. Zucoloto, Ian-ling Yu, Christopher J. Doig, Mary J. Dunbar, Kathy D. McCoy & Braedon McDonald
Critically ill patients in intensive care units experience profound alterations of their gut microbiota that have been linked to a high risk of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and adverse outcomes through unclear mechanisms. This study tested the hypothesis that susceptibility to nosocomial infections in critical illness is driven by pathological microbiota–immune interactions, in which gut microbiota dysbiosis triggers impaired systemic immunity and host defense.
