Genomic Monitoring of Pathogens in Water (GeMPaW)
The Consortium will be leading an opportunity to collaborate and contribute to AMR surveillance in water. Genome Canada has launched a $10M call: Genomic Monitoring of Pathogens in Water (GeMPaW) to help Canada defend its population, wildlife and environment from major threats posed by emerging pathogens (EPs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes. Although open to all Genome Centers to apply, the Consortium will be leading an application that will include many members from Western Canada and industry, and other provinces. Canada-UK Partnership
The Consortium is currently participating in a collaborative effort with the University of Bristol and other Canadian Universities as part of a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Canada-UK Partnership project. The aim of this project is to investigate the Impacts of Antibiotic Usage Reduction in Farmed Animals, with a specific interest in dairy cows and sheep. To facilitate further collaboration, a meeting will be held in Ottawa, ON at the end of June to bring together interested researchers in these focus areas to develop a new research project. Tuberculosis, syphilis, whooping cough, mumps and measles: Doctors alarmed at rise of ‘retro’ diseases
A surge in “retro” conditions that are typically rare in Canada highlights how people neglecting routine vaccinations is leading to higher infection rates and in some cases outbreaks, according to Dr. Lynora Saxinger. The most recent example is an outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in Alberta, which was declared in January and continues to grow. Click here to read more.

Canada Biomedical Research Fund and Biosciences Research Infrastructure Fund – Stage 2 2023
Through Canada’s Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy, the Government of Canada is investing more than $2.2B over 7 years to continue growing a strong, competitive biomanufacturing and life sciences sector, and to ensure Canada is prepared for future pandemics by increasing domestic capacity through investments and partnerships to produce life-saving vaccines and therapeutics. CBRF funding will provide support of $500k - $5M/year for up to 4 years. BRIF will fund up to 60% of eligible research infrastructure costs with a minimum request of $1M/project. Discoveries Horizons (pilot)
Discovery Horizons grants support investigator-initiated individual and team projects that broadly integrate or transcend disciplines to advance knowledge in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE). NSERC is piloting this interdisciplinary peer review mechanism. The shared peer review committee will assess all full applications submitted to NSERC’s Discovery Horizons program, as well as relevant applications submitted to SSHRC’s Insight Grants and CIHR’s Project Grants programs. For this competition, NSERC is expecting to award approximately 10 to 20 grants this year, valued from $50 - $100K/year. For more information please click here.
