WE HAVE 49 ORPHANS WITHOUT SPONSORS

We are currently looking forward for sponsors for 49 war orphans on the waiting list of the St. Nerses the Great Organization of Armenia.

We have 418 individual and institutional sponsors from the United States, Canada, France, and Armenia who have taken care of 1,522 minors and university students enrolled in our Orphan Sponsorship Program, administered by the Prelacy through the St. Nerses the Great Organization. Since 1993, a total of 3,676 orphans in Armenia and Artsakh have been sponsored.

We are grateful to all the sponsors who support our efforts with an annual contribution of $250 per child, as well as with additional amounts as special gifts. The contribution brings much needed relief to the financial burdens of the recipients and their families, and also boosts their morale.

SPONSOR A CHILD

Children are admitted into the Orphan Sponsorship program only when a sponsor is secured for them.

They remain a beneficiary until the age of 18 or longer if they decide to pursue higher education in a university of their choice.

Our program’s General Fund consists of one-time donations, in-lieu-of-flowers donations, and generous donations from some of our sponsors. It helps sponsored children receive their bi-monthly stipend even if their sponsors cannot continue their initial commitment, submit their payment late, or skip a year of their contribution for any reason. The fund will supply their stipend until another sponsor is secured for them or they become 18.

If you cannot make a long-time commitment but would like to contribute to the Orphans General Fund, please visit
https://armenianprelacy.org/programs/orphans-fund/ and choose the option “Other” for your tax-exempt charitable donation to the program.

You can always contact the Prelacy by email (
sophie@armenianprelacy.org) or telephone  for the sponsorship of both minors and university students. It is also possible to make donations of shares or IRA contributions.

The Prelacy’s Orphan Sponsorship program, established in 1993, remains the centerpiece of the Prelacy’s mission in Armenia and Artsakh. We are pleased to share some of the letters that children regularly address to their sponsors.

This week’s letter is from Lena,* who is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Vahe Dombalagian

* We use only the first names of the children to protect their privacy.

cDear Sponsor,

This is Lena. I was born and raised in Artsakh’s Martuni city. I am 11 years old, and I grew up in a family of heroes. I lost my dad, brother, uncle, and grandfather. I had many losses, and it will be very painful for me to lose my Monteberd-Martuni.

"THE ARMENIAN AMIRA CLASS OF ISTANBUL"
(Hagop L. Barsoumian)

In the preface of this remarkable book, Prof. Khachig Tololyan writes:

“Hagop Barsoumian disappeared (he was kidnapped on 31 January 1986 and in all probability murdered at an unknown date) before he could revise this work for publication. The text of this work is essentially that of his PhD dissertation for Columbia University, researched and written in the late 1970s under the direction of Professor Nina Garsoian. At the time of its completion around 1979 it was, as it remains now, the most thorough study of the Armenian amiras of the Ottoman empire.

Emerging in the early eighteenth century, the amiras dominated the communal life of Ottoman Armenians for more than a century, roughly 1750-1857, before losing their status and power. Barsoumian offers an analytical narrative that tells of the emergence, dominance and eventual disappearance of this elite group, which may arguably be called the internal “ruling class” of the Ottoman Armenian community during the period.”

THE ARMENIAN LANGUAGE
(Moushegh Ishkhan, 1914-1990)

The Armenian language is the home
and haven where the wanderer can own
roof and wall and nourishment.
He can enter to find love and pride,
locking the hyena and the storm outside.
For centuries its architects have toiled
to give its ceilings height.
How many peasants working
day and night have kept
its cupboards full, lamps lit, ovens hot.
Always rejuvenated, always old, it lasts
century to century on the path
where every Armenian can find it when he’s lost
in the wilderness of his future, or his past.

(Translated by Diana Der Hovanessian)

Death of Moushegh Ishkhan (June 12, 1990)

Moushegh Ishkhan was one of the most relevant names in Diaspora poetry in the 1940s-1960s and his decades-long work as a teacher forged generations of students.

Moushegh Djenderedjian was born in Sivri Hisar, near Ankara, in 1913. He was exiled with his family in 1915. He managed to survive the Armenian Genocide and finally settled in Damascus. His life changed upon a chance meeting with a teacher while he was struggling to make a living.
