Financial Update

We recently received approval from the SBA for forgiveness of $663,000 out of $675,000 of our combined PPP1 and PPP2 funding, leaving us with $12,000 in residual as a low interest rate loan. 

Additionally, we are eligible for $344,000 in Employee Retention Tax Credit and we have submitted our amended Form 941's to the IRS to secure this refund. The funds should be paid to us in the next nine months. Once received, these funds will be set aside for the future of the org.

As of the time of this writing, we have put a grand total of $175,000 into savings.

Capital Improvements
There are a few building improvements that we are working on in order to make our bingo game the best in the area. New wall paint, new retail counter, and air conditioning repairs.

Thanks to the power of our alumni network, the painting of the hall will be donated in-kind by alum Julio Matos (SCV Brass '89, '90, '92, Alumni Corps '02, '07) coming in at a value of $9,000! Painting is underway and will be completed next week.

When I spoke to Julio on the phone, and when he confirmed to me he was donating the work of his contractor to our beloved org, I broke down in tears and with gratitude. I have witnessed us all express a diverse range of approaches that reflect our love and care of Vanguard in our own ways. We all love the org, there is no question about that. But when we, the staff, see and experience people who contribute and help in a multitude of ways for the advancement of the organization, I personally can't help but tear up. It's that "We're in this together" mantra that makes us such a special and powerful group of people. Vanguard changed my life for the better, and I think there are many who feel that way too.

Upcoming Event
If you haven't heard, we have an exciting event coming up called "Timeless Excellence: VMAPA Hall of Fame Celebration '' which will take place on July 8th, 2023 at the ConXion to Community Center located in San Jose, CA. Our HOF Class of 2023 will be inducted at this event. Come and enjoy Gail Royer's spaghetti for dinner, experience the smooth sounds of our new Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (an all-volunteer community performance group of VMAPA), and take a tour of Miss Amana! Leadership Committee Work
Our Leadership Committees and Leadership Groups have been so hard at work and meeting regularly. These include the Vanguard Historical Society who are producing videos of the years that end in 3's, Hall of Fame Committee, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. We also have the Alumni Association Rebuilding Committee which consists of - Alumni Engagement, Alumni Outreach, Vanguard Member Support Network, and a fun new summer group (can't wait to share, more info coming soon!).

The Future
And lastly, planning for the future is ongoing, with every single line item being put under intense scrutiny. We know we have a major responsibility to serve our students, alumni, community, fans, and family with the best that Vanguard can be. We are doing our due diligence at this time, using extreme caution and a conservative outlook, all with the intent of protecting our future for many more generations.

Bingo Marketing Update

This month, I have the pleasure of sharing an enhanced version of the Bingo Marketing update that was presented at the previous board meeting. Within this report, I delve into our current strategies for marketing bingo, accompanied by insightful excerpts from an exclusive interview I recently conducted with Duncan Holaday, our Bingo Manager.

In the wake of the decision to cease organization operations for the 2023 season, a group of us alumni immediately turned our energy and efforts towards supporting the would-be membership of the 2023 Vanguard and Vanguard Cadets. Starting in January, we compiled a list of known members, which corps they would be spending the 2023 summer season with, and how any Vanguard alumnus could contribute directly towards any member's 2023 tuition.

As we approach the 2023 summer tour, we have set up a brand-new initiative, tentatively called the Vanguard Alumni Support Network. This project was conceived with the sole purpose of providing direct support to the 2023 SCV/C members over the summer, regardless of if they are planning to return to the Vanguard organization for its next competitive season. For this project, we have gathered 25 (and counting) volunteer alumni liaisons who have been assigned to support all members who are marching with any specific corps. For example, we have two alumni liaisons who are dedicated to our approx. 20 marching members at the Phantom Regiment this summer.

The volunteer Alumni Liaisons are responsible for checking in with their assigned members and providing necessary information to anyone who is interested in supporting the members at the assigned corps over the summer, whether that's dropping off treats at a show or volunteering with the corps over tour. The Support Network is designed to allow anyone who wants to support (Vanguard alum or otherwise) to be as flexible as possible with their support. Any supporter does not have to be locked in to working with any one corps. So if say, Phantom Regiment passes through town one week and you want to drop something off for the members there, the Liaisons for that corps will be able to help you coordinate that. Then, say the next week, the Cavaliers pass through town and you want to volunteer with them; you can then go to their liaison and they'll help you get in touch with the Cavaliers volunteer coordinator staff.

HOF Update

It’s been awhile since the SCV community has had an opportunity to gather together and share some good news! Getting together and sharing a nostalgic plate of Gail Royer’s infamous spaghetti sauce over a pile of noodles may be exactly what you need right now! It’s unbelievable that SCV isn’t on the field this summer, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t come together in July and have some fun reconnecting with each other and celebrating our SCV experience as we acknowledge our new Hall of Fame inductees: Veronica Flores, Chris & Harry Morrow, Gary Moyer and Tim Salzman, as well as to celebrate our unsinkable Vanguard spirit! Here are the details:

For those of you that would like to arrive early, Band Leader Ron Abadam will officially kick-off the evening at 5:30 pm with music from Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. If you have not had the pleasure of experiencing this group before, you may be surprised to learn how many members are SCV alumni. Ron has promised that included in their 90-minute musical program, will be some of our favorite drum corps tunes!

If you’re not quite ready to jump into a jazz concert immediately, or if you would like the opportunity to take a look inside Ms Amana, Kale Duprey (Vanguard Fleet Manager) and Tammy Adams (SCV Assistant Chef Extraordinaire) will be waiting outside from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in front of Ms Amana to give you a tour and share her story.
 
Dinner will be served buffet style beginning at 7:00 pm with evening presentations honoring our 2023 Hall of Fame inductees at 8:00 pm. The evening will conclude with a meet and greet with the Corps Director Gio Bastante. We are still in the process of finalizing the rest of the program, so who knows what other surprises we may have in store for you. You’ll never know if you aren’t there! So, where will you be on July 8th?

Hello All! 

Well, our first gig at the Branham High School “Jazz Cafe” is in the books and was a great success! Hopefully, we were able to inspire some of the young players at the school’s music program as well as generate interest in the community about our organization. Now it’s back to the rehearsal sessions to get ready for the next gig. We will be playing at the beginning of the Hall of Fame event so keep your ears open and stay vigilant for upcoming info for the “where and when” of the party. We don’t always have a chance to get together these days to celebrate with each other so It would be absolutely fantastic if you came out to have some fun and supported us at the same time! The VJO is looking forward to seeing you all at the Hall of Fame event.
