The school textbooks crisis continues. Prices of textbooks are still rising this year, despite last year's policy change banning the sales tactic whereby schools receive free teaching materials from publishers. As a result, the education bureau has proposed to develop an e-textbook system. LRI does not believe that this is the best solution. We believe that the problem lies with the fact that students are forced to purchase particular textbook as a strict requirement under the current education system. Also, the education reform a decade ago, which makes Cantonese the main teaching language, gave Hong Kong students no choices, but to purchase textbooks from local publishers. Forcing parents to buy specific books is the main issue in this crisis.
The Lion Rock's Roar
In his TV appearance on RTHK, Peter Wong said that minimum wage only benefits the big companies, not the poor. The poor may be earning more on paper, but not in fact. The inflation which followed the minimum wage policy actually nullified wage increase of wages and there has been virtually no improvement of life for the poor. It is the SMEs suffering from this policy, and the big companies are benefiting from a reduction of competition in the market.
In his personal column in Next Magazine, Simon Lee said that the LINK should be praised, not condemned. For decades, the housing authority failed to provide local jobs, despite the many shopping malls they built in public housing estates - but the LINK achieved it. Maximising land use is the key.
