1) SPIN - Musical Production - May 7

Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00PM
at Harbourfront Theatre, Summerside

The Harbourfront Theatre is donating a portion of their proceeds to women’s programs at the East Prince Women’s Information Centre for those that attend SPIN on Tuesday , May 7. Admission is by donation.

SPIN – Starring the Bicycle as muse, musical instrument and agent of social change. Through a series of songs played live on a vintage bicycle, SPIN recounts a theatrical cycle of stories about women, cycling and liberation. Inspired by the incredible true tale of Annie Londonderry, the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle in 1894, Parry spins a web of stories which travel from 19th century women’s emancipation to 21st century consumer culture, peeling back layers of history to ultimately reveal a profoundly contemporary and personal heart for her theme of liberation.

Created by award – winning Canadian Songwriter, spoken word and theatre artist Evalyn Parry, SPIN features Parry’s unique talent as a raconteur and her outspoken, personal and political creations hold a powerful vision of social activism, while her irreverent wit holds nothing sacred. Parry’s “co-star”, a vintage bicycle, is suspended in a mechanic’s stand on stage. Backed by her unusual and highly accomplished band, the bike is played by percussion Brad Hart who, using brushes on the fenders, bows on the spokes and drum sticks on a variety of tuned bells, conjures an astonishing array of sounds with this iron horse. On the other side of the stage sound artist Anna Friz plays instruments from the more traditional (accordion, harmonica ) to the even more unusual (amplified buzz from flashing bike lights ), creating a richly textured and utterly unique sonic accompaniment to Parry’s songs and monologues. SPIN is staged by award – winning director Ruth Madoc- Jones with video and production design by acclaimed designer Beth Kates.

Springtime changes are afoot. First the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada moved to a new location on Water Street, and now CLIA is scheduled to move out of their long-time location in the Sullivan Building and to re-open in an office up at the Royalty Centre.

Renovations and moving arrangements can run into delays, so the dates are not "writ in stone", but the current plan is to close CLIA's current location at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 17th. and to reopen to the public at 09:00 on Monday, May 27th in the new location.

There will be a Communications "blitz" once all the details of the move are finalized, but for now you can expect CLIA to be closed for an entire week at some point in May. Our postal address, email addresses and telephone numbers should remain the same. All pertinent details of the move will be accessible on our website: www.CLIAPEI.ca  Please wish us luck with the move (and come for a visit at the Royalty Centre)!
