Bike to Work Week a Success!

Nine Happy Dancing Turtle and Hunt Utilities Group employees pedaled for a total of 362 miles during the National Bike to Work week, May 12-17. Using a quick calculator, all those miles added up to well over ten thousand calories burned. Here's some numbers that will put the effort into perspective:

10,562 Calories equals out to approximately:
  • 88 Bananas
  • 52 Cans of Cherry Coke
  • 2,640 Red Grapes
  • 18 Big Mac Cheeseburgers
  • 92 Large Apples
  • 40 Milky Way Candy Bars
  • 8 Bags of Lays Potato Chips

That adds up quickly when you don't eat so well and only makes exercise that much important.
The teams saved a total 340 pounds of CO2 by biking instead of using a vehicle.

If you'd like to find out more on biking or want to try and pedal your own 362 miles, you can go to www.nationalbikechallenge.org.

Eco Camp Dates: Spots Filling Up
If you're looking for something for your little ones to do this summer (besides watch Netflix and eat Count Chocula), HDT's got a great opportunitiy for you. We are offering four sessions of weeks-long day camps filled with environmental curriculum and edutainment (it's a word.)

Your child will learn to respect and embrace nature with experiments, outdoor experiences, projects, crafts, games and field trips all focused around environmental stewardship. Registration materials and information brochures are available online. Spots fill up quickly, so be sure to get in on this fun (and educational!) camp.

Something we are offering new this year will be a choice between morning or afternoon camps for your Pre-K (4 & 5 year old). This is being offered because last year's Pre-K camp filled up early and several campers had to be turned away. With camps being offered throughout the summer, you will be able to find one that fits your needs.

Grades 1-2: June 17-21
Grades 3-4: July 15-19
Pre-K (Ages 4&5): July 29-August 2 (Choose between morning or afternoon sessions)
Grades 5-6: August 19-23

Memorial Day Grilling Alternatives

Monday is the unofficial beginning of Summer, Memorial Day. Many traditions are alive and well that go hand in hand with this three day weekend, like parade watching, swimming, and grilling! Nothing can beat a juicy, charcoal-cooked steak from your own grill, right?

But, you don't have to be committed to the steak this year. There are many delicious alternatives that will whet your pallet. We took a look around to see what looked good. The grilled portobello mushroom recipe and corn on the cob on the grill both looked great, but one stood out above the rest.

Here's the recipe:

Grilled Romaine Lettuce with Maytag Cheese

2 heads romaine cut lengthwise

1 Tbsp good organic olive oil

1 clove garlic

2 handfuls of minced Maytag (if you have a good blue cheese producer in your area, feel free to switch it out)

2 cups grape tomatoes sliced in half

1/2 cup organic roasted and salted cashews

crushed sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste

Method

1.) Combine the olive oil and the garlic in a shallow plate and dip the romaine in the combination

2.) Grill over medium heat for about 3 minutes on each side

3.) Top with Maytag, tomatoes, and cashews

4.) Season with sea salt and pepper

Serves 4
