3) Proportional Representation (PR) Action Team Campaign Kickoff

This Saturday, May 7 in Emerald

Emerald Community Centre - Boxcar Pub & Grill, 1910 Nodd Rd, Emerald, PE, C0B 1M0.
Starting at 2pm, and finishing with music, drinks and a potluck dinner around 6:30 or 7.

The event is nonpartisan (or perhaps, 'multipartisan'), and is going to be a whole lot of fun. It'll be the next big step in preparing us to win Proportional Representation on PEI, in this November's plebiscite.

Together, we'll go over the basics of why proportional representation is important, share our campaign strategies, and practice how we will talk about PR with the 'general public' of PEI. We'll also invite you to share your creative campaign ideas, and form local action groups with other people from your region.

You can register by joining our Facebook event, or if you're not on Facebook, register here or contact Anna: anna.c.keenan@gmail.com or (902) 978 1178. On-site childcare and carpooling can be arranged upon request.

6) Charlottetown to Host Micro-Grant Pitch Party

The City of Charlottetown is hosting its first ever Micro-Grant Pitch Party to give the public an opportunity to vote on their favorite proposed projects for the City’s Community Sustainability Micro-Grant Program.

The Micro-Grant Pitch Party is taking place on Thursday, May 12 at the Murphy’s Community Centre, 200 Richmond St, Charlottetown, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Individuals who submitted proposals for the Community Sustainability Micro-Grant Program will each present their idea in five minutes or less at the Pitch Party. All attendees will be given the opportunity to vote and the top-voted proposals will receive grants of up to a maximum of $2,500.

"We are very excited to give the public a chance to hear all of the wonderful ideas and projects, and vote for their favourites," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "The micro-grant program stimulates community action and engages citizens in creative community efforts while generating real accomplishments citizens can take pride in."

The Community Sustainability Micro-Grant Program offers small grants of $1,000 to $2,500 for projects in Charlottetown that contribute to and enhance community-minded sustainability efforts. The projects must align with the goals and actions of the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan and be completed by the end of 2016.

"It is inspiring to see the creativity and passion that stems from these proposals," said Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee. "We want to extend an invitation to everyone to join us for this free, family friendly event."

9) PEIHS Cat Litter Drive

The PEI Humane Society is launching the first ever “Cat Litter” drive from May 6–16. In 10 days, The PEI Humane Society hopes to raise thousands of dollars worth of cat litter for cats and kittens in shelter and in foster care. Cat litter is one of the shelter’s biggest expenses for a cost of $18,000 per year. The PEIHS is asking the public to drop off un-scented, un-clumping cat litter at the shelter during regular business hours at 309 Sherwood Road.

Monetary donations are also appreciated, and allow the shelter to purchase much needed supplies throughout the year. Other items needed besides cat litter are litter boxes and scoops. For as little as $2, donors can buy one scoop or donate $10 for one bag of litter. Donations can be made in shelter or online at www.peihumanesociety.com.

Every year the PEIHS care for over 800 cats with an average length of stay of 26 days in shelter. The PEIHS also supply litter to all foster care homes caring for the influx of Mother cats and kittens during the Spring to early Summer. They stay in foster care for 6–8 weeks until they are big enough to be adopted. That is an incredible amount of cat litter in a short time frame.

The PEI Humane Society is located at 309 Sherwood Road, Charlottetown. For more information, email jharkness@peihumanesociety.com.  Source: BUZZon.com

10) Public Presentation - Birds Bees & Pornography: What you don’t know but your kids do…

A Presentation for Parents & Caregivers by Cordelia Anderson

When: May 25, 6:30-7:45pm
Where: Rodd Charlottetown Hotel

Kent Street, Charlottetown

Become educated and empowered to support your child’s healthy development.

Today’s pornography is not what parents grew up with. Today’s Internet pornography is widely accessible to young children with content difficult for many of us to even imagine. This content is influencing the attitudes, behaviors and brain development of our children.

Parents need information about the ways youth are accessing it, the realities of the images and messages - and the research that shows harm and negative impact. Join Cordelia Anderson for this free session to learn strategies that counter the messages in pornography & help your children to develop as healthy human beings capable of respectful and caring relationships.

When: Monday, June 13, 7-9 pm
Where: Holland College MacKinnon Lecture Theatre

Charlottetown Campus, Kent Street Entrance

Family violence affects thousands of families in Canada. Often children are the forgotten victims when they live with this violence. Children may be at risk of emotional and physical harm in these circumstances. These problems are most severe during the conflict of parental separation and divorce.

This presentation will address the risk factors that increase the harm for children and opportunities for prevention and early intervention.

Although communities rely on professionals in justice, social service and mental health agencies, this presentation will highlight the essential role of a caring community response by neighbours, friends, family and co-workers.

Dr. Peter Jaffe is a clinical psychologist and Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University as well as the Academic Director of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children. This presentation is sponsored by the Department of Family and Human Services.
