Overgrown Hedge & Misplaced Bins on Sunbury Road
Roger visited a resident of the Stonehouse Estate to view the overgrown hedge on Sunbury Road and give advise.

Also pointed out to him was that on the paved front garden of flats in Sunbury Road, London Road residents are storing their rubbish bins, despite there being allocated space behind their flats on London Road for the bins. Roger counted 16 misplaced bins during his visit.

Roger is in talks with the relevant officers about both of these issues.

Urgent Alert for Whitley Residents
From Doug Lowe of the Whitley Residents and Neighbourhood Watch Association:
It has come to our notice that an official application has been made to Coventry City Council's Planning Department to give their approval to the following proposal:-
Demolition of existing site service officer's dwelling and erection of single storey nursery building with canopy and associated landscaping and alterations to pedestrian access.
Our concerns relate to two main factors:-

1.  '...a transport statement is not required in the application':
  • The designer's view being that 'there will be no cumulative impact on the surrounding highways.'
  • We disagree!
2.   Without designated 'drop-off/pick-up' points, no consideration has been given to matters of the protection and safe delivery and collection of up to 30 three/ four year olds on the already dangerously congested roads.

If you care please attend:
EXTRAORDINARY General Meeting on Wednesday, 29th March, 7 - 8pm in the Whitley Community Centre, The Avenue when this matter will be the ONLY business discussed.

Brown Bin Collection Problems
Roger was contacted by a resident as his brown lidded bin hadn’t been collected despite it containing only garden rubbish & been put out at 7am. The resident had reported the issue to the council but received no response in 7 days.

After Roger’s intervention the resident reported that the bin had been emptied. Roger was informed that there had been problems with the refuse vehicles.

Whitley Petition
Last week at the full council meeting Roger jointly submitted the Whitley petition that had been signed by 551 residents requesting traffic calming & road safety measures in the Whitley Triangle. The petition has been referred to Cabinet Member for City Services

Green Bin Collection Problems
Last Tuesday the general waste bins in Bolton Close were not collected. Residents were told to leave them out 24/7 but still no collection so they asked Roger to investigate.

Response from Layla Shannon, Senior Waste Management Officer:
Due to operational difficulties we have struggled to have a crew returning for missed bins this week. We have a crew operating tomorrow, to which I will add Bolton Close to the work load.

Litter on Leaf Lane, Whitley
In our 12th February update, we reported that the litter on Leaf Lane had been removed. This prompted an email from a resident in Whitley stating that Leaf Lane on her side was in a terrible state. Roger contacted the officers & we’ve now been informed that this has also been cleared along with Jaguar Lane & the Whitley Bridge end of Abbey Road.

John Grace Street – Parking Petition
Last week we reported that, according to a survey, John Grace Street did not qualify to join the Cheylesmore parking Scheme. Roger & the petition spokesperson have asked to challenge this so that it is heard at a cabinet meeting. Additional information is to be presented and a request has been made to know when the street survey of parked vehicles, was carried out.

Daventry Road – Blocked Drives
Roger has again visited residents on Daventry Road, close to Asda, about problems that they continue to have with cars obstructing their drives. Shoppers see the car parking bays but don’t realise that portions of the bay must be kept clear for residents to access their drive ways. The residents are continually calling out the police as they are blocked in their driveway.

Roger is awaiting a response & hopefully a solution from officers.

Hazel Noonan – Honorary Alderman

Hazel Noonan was a councillor in Cheylesmore for 16 years and last week become an Alderman of the City of Coventry. This honour is only given to selected ex-councillors who have served their city well for a number of years.

The current £1 will stop being legal tender (and so won’t be accepted in shops) on 15 October 2017. After that, if you still have any old £1 coins, you won’t be able to spend them.

Many banks and building societies have said they will continue to accept the old pound coin after 15 October but only for their own customers.

Bridge Link between Council House & Civic Centre
The bridge link between the Old Council House and Civic Centre 3 is soon to be removed in preparation for the disposal of the Civic Centre 1-4 to Coventry University. Once the bridge is demolished the previous window detail will be recreated on the Old Council House, which is to be retained by the council.

The bridge link will be physically removed a Sunday and is likely to take place in the next 4 weeks. It will require Earls Street to be closed for that day.
