Leadville Laurel's
November (2016) Newsletter!

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)! Although I had hoped to write 50K words for this year's challenge (and I know some people who will!), I've recently justified why that likely won't happen this year. And I'm okay with that. Waterwight: Flux, Book II of the Waterwight Series is outlined and ready for me to fill in the details!

November is also another hunting month. Two hunting seasons have occupied my time this year (among other life things), and I'd like to offer my sort-of-but-not-quite-stream-of-consciousness piece about my experience: Hunting 3.0. I haven't yet written about my road kill elk, so you have that to look forward to!

Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving. We'll be having elk. And turkey.

NOTE: All future newsletters will come from my laurel@alphapeak.com email.

UPCOMING EVENTS!

Many fun things to look forward to this fall!

  • And don't forget to give NaNoWriMo a try this year! I've been able to knock out huge chunks of my published novels by making the commitment to be accountable to my writing goals for one solid month (and it's FREE)! Check out the site and contact me for more about my personal experience with this November challenge.
  • Get updates from Chaffee County Writers Exchange on upcoming workshops and consider becoming a member! Their workshops are great fun.
  • Is poetry more your cup of tea? Join the Shavano Poets! They meet monthly in Salida, or get on their mailing list and receive prompts each month!

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARIES!
Be a "Friend"! Please. They do so very much for their local authors!

Exciting news about other authors/bloggers! Check them out! (and if you have news about your work you'd like to share, let me know).
The holidays approach, and books make great gifts! Support readers AND authors this year!

Mike Lerario, my West Point classmate, has a #1 New Release on leadership! Leadership in Balance: The Fulcrum-Centric Plan for Emerging and High Potential Leaders is available now. Buy one for the leaders and leader wannabes in your life (mine just arrived)!

Jennifer Sweete has released her book The Poet & The Widow,  a "memoir of a love that transcended even death." Mine's on my nightstand, and it's a beautiful book.

Donna Baier Stein (founder of the Tiferet Journal and author of The Silver Baron's Wife) has a book of short stories--Sympathetic People--that will trigger emotions you never knew you had. Each story's ending left me wanting more, yet knowing it was the perfect place to end. Now I want to write short stories!

Ann Parker has a Wild West series and she's still writing! Order the whole Silver Rush Mystery Series for the perfect gift!

Sherry Ficklin has so many books out now I can't keep up, and her latest one, Gilded Cage, looks like great fun! Check out all of Sherry's books and order one (or lots) as gifts!

Carol Bellhouse also has quite a variety of works and genres available for a wide audience!

Laurel McHargue (that's me!) just released Hai CLASS ku!

For only $5.75 (because the haiku poem format is 5/7/5!) you get 90 days of entertainment. Purchase one for any students or teachers you know and encourage them to submit to the contest! I'll be publishing a compilation of winning entries in time for Christmas 2017 at cost.
Here's my Press Release about the project (including a dorky selfie-video).

And now, your prompts for the next 30ish days:

1. Wrap yourself in the garments of a 19th Century pioneer.

Now describe everything you'll need to do to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for your family. You have neither electricity nor running water (nor Safeway nor drive-through package stores nor . . . )

2. Write about your expectations for the upcoming holidays.

Analyze your expectations. Are they based on past experiences? Are there past experiences you'd like to repeat this year? Any you might want to prevent from happening again? Who's in charge?

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

If you enjoy a book, please write a good review on Amazon and/or Goodreads! Good reviews are (almost) as good as $$$$$ for up-and-coming authors, especially for indie authors!

Please do NOT say that you're the best friend of or are related to the person whose work you review. (This can adversely affect the credibility of your rating and the author). THANK YOU!

TIPS

1. Order your holiday gift books now!

2. Check out authors I've highlighted in my newsletters and encourage them to keep writing!

3. Encourage them by ordering their books . . .

4. And by telling the world why you like their books (by writing a quickie review)!
THANK YOU!
