Cantina del Pino - Cru Barbaresco
Newly released and highly anticipated 2019s
Revisiting the Deliciously Forward 2018s a Year On
We can think of no other Langhe producer whose wines are so pale and transparent as those of Renato Vacca. Across the range, his Barbaresco might be mistaken for rosé, so pale is the color... until, of course, you stick your nose in the glass. It is then that you get the full and unexpectedly intense perfume of Nebbiolo; it is the dried-rose and violet kind, with a touch of wintergreen and a hint of earth. There is less of the camphor or tar in a del Pino Barbaresco than is typical in heartier examples but they do not lack for structure.

The stark contrast between appearance and character is confirmed on the palate with all of his wines. They possess a firm and sharp backbone of dry austerity, with the tannin and acid, together in abundance. But this structure acts as a vehicle to deliver those beautiful and delicate floral nuances through a long, long finish - that is the house style and it is front and center through all of Renato’s wines, in every vintage.

Sadly 2019 was the last vintage Renato Vacca saw, before he passed away at just 51 years old, from cancer, in 2020. HIs spirit lives on in the estate below the Ovello hill. His widow Franca shows a sure hand and a complete understanding of the tremendous personality Renato fashioned in his wines.

We are very pleased to offer the newly arriving and much anticipated 2019s (here Feb 15th) and the fabulous and 'friendly' blockbuster 2018s, in stock and available now.
Barbaresco Ovello 2019
$69 per bottle
95+ points Wine Advocate: "Opening to dusty mineral notes of crushed limestone, the 2019 Barbaresco Ovello is a focused and angular wine that makes for a very pretty presentation. The aromas are direct and vertical, given momentum by shadings of iron ore and pencil shaving. I love the extreme focus of this wine. Some 6,000 bottles were released, and as always, Cantina del Pino offers enormous quality at this price point."

Barbaresco Albesani 2019
$65 per bottle
95 points Vinous: "The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani is a powerful, classically austere wine that needs time to emerge. Deceptively medium in body, the 2019 packs a pretty serious punch. Wild cherry, kirsch, mint, white pepper and cedar give the 2019 striking aromatic top notes. Clean mineral notes extend the finish nicely. This is quite promising. (Drink between 2027-2039)"

Barbaresco DOCG 2019
$55 per bottle
94+ points Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Barbaresco has a slender, almost fragile personality with small berry tones, wild strawberry and blueberry. The effect is very beautiful, especially the melting tannins that characterize the mouthfeel. The wine is fermented in oak and stainless steel and matures in large oak casks for 24 months. This is a production of 12,000 bottles."

Barbaresco Gallina 2018
$65 per bottle
95+ points Wine Advocate: "This is my favorite bottle among this group of new releases from Cantina del Pino. The 2018 Barbaresco Gallina offers a beautiful blend of fruity aromas, floral intensity and salty mineral definition. The bouquet transitions from tart cherry to lavender to crushed oyster shell. It closes with more red fruit and cassis as the wine opens in the glass. This is one of the best Barbaresco tasted in this report. I can't wait to see where it goes 10 years from now."

Barbaresco Ovello 2018
$69 per bottle
94 points Wine Advocate: "Showing subtle and sweet fruit, the 2018 Barbaresco Ovello is all about softness and silkiness. Starting off shy, the wine grows in intensity with time in the glass. It shows good structure and stays gripped to the palate thanks to the well-integrated tannins. There is pretty mineral definition as well, but ultimately the wine is fleshed out by the softness and its accessible fruit."

Barbaresco Albesani 2018
$65 per bottle
95 points Wine Advocate: "Very true to the Nebbiolo grape, the Cantina del Pino 2018 Barbaresco Albesani reveals an especially bright and lifted character with tart berry fruit and crushed roses. Poised for long cellar aging, the wine is coiled tight in terms of tannins and texture at this young stage in its drinking window. Give it ample time to unwind."

Langhe Nebbiolo 2022
$29 per bottle
Discountable; mix and match with the Barbera, 5% off a 6-pack, 10% off a case of 12
92 points Vinous: "The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is bright and effusive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and white pepper lend notable aromatic brilliance. Short élevage of four months in cask is expertly judged. (Drink between 2024-2032)"

Barbera d'Asti bricco Gallinetta 2021 $25
$25 per bottle
Discountable; mix and match with the Nebbiolo, 5% off a 6-pack, 10% off a case of 12
