Domaine Felettig
Superb 1er Crus from Chambolle Musigny
2022 Pre-sale not to be Missed!
If you get a room full of serious Burgundy lovers into a room and pin each of them to the wall and ask them pointedly 'which is your favorite village? If you could only drink wine from one, which would it be?' A significant majority would reply with solemnity 'Chambolle-Musigny.' But they really don't like the question. They really don't want the word spread around. The trouble is, there's just too little wine made in Chambolle and what there is, is getting way too expensive!

Why Chambolle? - Chambolle is where Pinot's intoxicating perfume is at its finest, most delicate, and most seductive. Good Chambolle may not be as powerful or as intense as Vosne, or even as exotic, but Chambolle can claim more beauty, simple as that. At its best, the perfume is so delightful that you don't want to drink the wine because you can't bear to see it go away.

The Chambolle problem is that there is just too little wine, well, too little affordable wine. The great grand crus of Bonnes Mares to the North and Musigny to the South produce some of the finest wine on the planet but at such a cost! Bonnes Mares is never cheap but the best and rarest Musignys fetch prices higher than Romanee Conti. And now the 1er crus are getting in on the action. Buying Amoureuses has become an expensive cult; Charmes, Sentiers, Haut Doix are up there with most Cortons and the other myriad small sites are so scattered among tiny domains that the good ones seem to evaporate as soon as they are released.

The Solution? Find a good supplier who has a good line on a good or great domaine's 1er crus at a good price. The answer is, Courtier, and Domaine Felettig.

Domaine Felettig
Gilbert and Christine Felettig make a stunning array of 1er crus, almost entirely from the village of Chambolle. In November we tasted 21 wines from barrel and bottle, more than half were Chambolle 1er crus. Surely no one has a better understanding of the terroir of this fantastic village.

The wines are superb. In a few short years, Gilbert and Christine have propelled the domaine to the top flight. Five or ten years ago they were unknown outside a loyal following, now the have become a chic address and a darling of the critics, as the scores and reviews from Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) testify. Jasper is about as reelable a judge as you will ever find in Burgundy. He began his career as a leading specialist Burgundy retailer in the UK. Became a Master of Wine at an early age before moving to Beaune and transitioning to wine critic and all-round authority in recent years.

Offered pre-arrival ETA this Spring.
Chambolle Musigny les Charmes 2022
3 bottles available,
$180 per bottle
(94-96) points Jasper Morris: "From vines planted in the early 1950s, 30-35 hl/ha. 50% whole bunch vinification. A bright and intense dark purple, exceptionally Charmes type nose with its welcoming generosity. Really kicks on behind, developing a second wave of powerful red berry fruit. It will eat its oak easily. A very impressive Chambolle Charmes. Drink from 2030-2039. Tasted: December 2023."

Chambolle Musigny les Plantes 2022
6 bottles available,
$149 per bottle
(93-95) points Jasper Morris: "A plot from the early 1950s, one new 400 litre barrel, and all whole bunch. The whole bunches give a sort of bubbly effect plus cholate, all on pretty red fruit. Very light on its feet, delicious. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023."

Chambolle Musigny Feusselottes 2022
9 bottles available,
$145 per bottle
(92-95) points Jasper Morris: "A fine dense core to this with crimson rim. The oak is a little more apparent at the back in terms of tannins. Very good and juicy raspberry flavours, limestone and very stony, clearly different from other Feusselottes – but then this is from the Grands Murs sectors. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023."

Chambolle Musigny les Greunchers 2022
12 bottles available,
$145 per bottle
(92-95) points Jasper Morris: "Three barrels made from healthy fruit, 100% whole bunches. Not too deep in colour. A delicious rose petal nose, not exaggerated. Indeed, very stylish. Now I can see some coffee notes sometimes found here in Chambolle-Musigny. Very lovely and quite long. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: December 2023."

Chambolle Musigny les Combottes 2022
12 bottles available,
$140 per bottle
(92-95) points Jasper Morris: "Made from 70 year old vines, with 55-60% whole bunch vinification. A bright medium deep purple. More in red berry fruit, raspberry, without the iron rich notes of neighbouring Aux Echanges. Lifted and quite classy. This is really quite substantial from such a lesser known 1er cru. Vines from early 1950s could help, of course. Gilbert suggests that this could be the quintessence of Chambolle. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023."

Chambolle Coteaux Bourguignons 2022
36 bottles available,
$25 per bottle
Back Vintages
Beaune Champs Pimont 2019

6 bottles available, $65 per bottle
(91-93) points Wine Advocate: "Sumptous and expressive, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs-Pimont delivers generous aromas of raspberries, woodsmoke, spices and plums. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and charming, its refined tannins are entirely cloaked in succulent fruit. One of the last wines in the cellar to finish its malolactic fermentation, this cuvée was much easier to read in November than September."

Beaune Champs Pimont 2020
12 bottles available,
$79 per bottle
(91-93) points Wine Advocate: "Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, licorice, rose petals, baking chocolate and loamy soil, the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs-Pimont is medium to full-bodied, rich and gourmand, with a fleshy core of fruit and fine, powdery tannins. Despite a late malolactic fermentation, it's already nicely integrated."

Chambolle Musigny Lavrottes 2021
6 bottles available,
$139 per bottle
(91-93) points Jasper Morris: "30% whole bunch, little grapes after frost. Dark colour with a purple edge. Quite a charming relatively floral bouquet but with underlying fruit concentration. A real burst of energy on the palate, with a bit of fresh white pepper, raspberry and roses, really very good indeed once again. Flows across the palate. Drink from 2026-2032."

Chambolle Musigny Les Carrieres 2021
12 bottles available,
$149 per bottle
(92-94) points Jasper Morris: "One third whole bunch vinification. Fine rich mid purple. A beautiful nose with the floral attributes of the whole bunches, lifting the perfume. Svelte and suave, this is magical and has become silkier though there is still a firm limestone thread throughout. A lovely expression. Gilbert feels he has tamed the overt acidity of this vineyard. Drink from 2026-2032."

Corton Grandes Lolieres 2021
6 bottles available, $195 per bottle
(94-97) points Jasper Morris: "Made by the vinification intégrale manner after pedicel treatment, then aged in a new 150 litre François Frères barrel. A fine fresh medium deep purple. The bouquet is a little more open than Petits Monts, with some pepper alongside concentrated peonies and red berries. Exquisite delicacy, this wine is certainly the more open of the two. Apparently was the other way round a month ago! Hoping the wood doesn’t dominate. Really long intense finish with the highest quality. Drink from 2028-2036."
