2) AIDS PEI Job Posting

AIDS PEI is seeking a responsible, engaged, and energetic post-secondary student to fill the position of Event Coordinator. The responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to: collaborating on the development and implementation of a fundraising campaign, participation in teleconferences, webinars, and meetings, building relations with community partners to support fundraising efforts, soliciting sponsorships, donations, and volunteers, managing event logistics, coordinating volunteers, and maintaining records and reports.

The successful applicant will be supported in their role by existing AIDS PEI staff, and will also have access to a national events coordinator. Weekly meetings with AIDS PEI’s program manager will provide structured support, and a space for the identification of meaningful skill-building opportunities.

Wage: $12.00 per hour – 30 hours per week
Duration: 8 weeks

3) PEI Gay Tourism Association Meeting

The regular meeting of the PEI Gay Tourism Association will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, 19 May, at The Mount Continuing Care Community on Mount Edward Road, Charlottetown.  Everyone welcome.  Information:  Bill Kendrick (Experience PEI)  billkendrick@island-images.ca


 

4) Annual Dandelion Festival

The 10th Annual Dandelion Festival is coming up Victoria Day, Monday May the 23rd, at Stratford Town Centre from 10 to 3.  It is a Family Friendly event with many indoor and outdoor activities for children, numerous booths dealing with healthier living, renewable energy and sustainability, music provided by Harpist Jill Harris and by the Queens County Fiddlers, and 4 workshops starting at 10 with Cooking with Dandelions, followed by Vegetable Fermentation & Kombucha at 11:30, Pesticide-Free Lawn Care at 1, and Healthier Personal Care & Cleaning Products at 2:30.  Food ($) by Simple Feast Catering, an art display celebrating the dandelion, and dandelion pancake & syrup samples. Admission FREE. Hosted by the PEI Environmental Health Cooperative.


 

5) 3rd Annual Herb Day


The 3rd annual Herb Day is happening Sunday May 29th, 2016 between 10 am and 4 pm. This event is organized by the PEI Food Exchange in partnership with the Farm Centre. Plant sale, workshops, marketplace, seed sales and seed exchange, and garden tour happening. 

Location: PEI Farm Centre, 420 University Avenue, Charlottetown

Admission to this family friendly event is free. Goodwill donations for the workshops are gratefully accepted. 

Plant Sale
Herb Day is much anticipated by gardeners who want local healthy seedlings. Jen and Derek's Organic Farm will be returning with certified organic transplants, as will Heart Beet Organics, Gail Kern and other local farmers. The diversity of plants has been expanded this year to include medicinal herbs and some unusual plants like goji berry. 

Workshops
10 - 11 Jordan MacPhee demonstrates how to build a raised garden bed. If you are a new gardener and are serious about starting to grow some of your own food this year - this is not to be missed. 

11-12 Pairing herbs with your food. Savories and sweets, staples and treats. Classic combos of herbs in your menu and new adventures into tastes to tickle your pallet. You need only your nose and a willing sense of adventure and the Queen of Herbs, Gail Kern, to guide you.

12- 1 Join Emily Doyle of Emalee Wildflower Apothecary to learn how to make your own herbal tinctures. These remedies take hardly any time and are easy to use everyday. 

1- 2 Jeanne Maki is returning to Herb Day to share her considerable knowledge about growing and using medicinal herbs. 

2 - 3 In honour of peppers, the International Herb for 2016, Jen Campbell will share her experience of growing many different kinds of peppers. 

3- 4 Healthy soil grow healthy food. Tracey Allen will show us how to ensure our soil gets what it needs to provide nutritionally rich plants.

Marketplace
Vendors in the marketplace will have herbed themed and garden related items for sale.

Seed Sales and seed exchange
An opportunity to get your seeds and support a good cause by purchasing seeds from the farm centre. Seeds of Community will operate a seed exchange for part of the day. 

Garden Tour
An opportunity to get a guided tour of the Legacy Community Garden and Orchard - now going into its 3rd season and one of Charlottetown's greatest assets - a 8 acre garden in the heart of the city. 

Lunch
There will be a simple herb themed lunch and tea and coffee supplied by the new in house chef at the farm centre and is charged separate. 

The PEI Food Exchange is a grassroots group committed to increasing food security on PEI. The PEI Food Exchange aims to empower individuals to increase food security for themselves and their communities through gleaning, growing food, and gaining knowledge.

6) ACIC IYIP Internship Applications Are Now Open!

ACIC works with its Canadian member organizations and their international partners to offer interns valuable experience both overseas as well as in Canada. Interns will work in the areas of securing the future of children and youth, stimulating sustainable economic growth, and increasing food security. Through this experience, interns develop skills and experience that will assist them in securing employment as well as enabling them to make connections and develop relationships with many Canadian development practitioners.

Internships are eight months in duration, with six months spent in host partner organization countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Ghana, Gambia, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda. Interns also work in Canada for up to two months with an ACIC member organization both prior to their departure overseas and upon their return.

7) Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative Website Launched

Domestic homicides account for 1 in 5 murders in Canada. Each province and territory is involved in learning from these deaths through death review committees, coroners'investigations, inquests, inquiries or research studies.

The Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative (CDHPI) website www.cdhpi.ca is dedicated to bringing researchers and practitioners together to share knowledge that can inform promising practices in the prevention of domestic homicide. In particular, the CDHPI is focused on identifying emerging risk assessment, risk management, and safety planning strategies.

A major part of our work emphasizes the unique needs of vulnerable populations such as Aboriginal, immigrant and refugee, rural, remote, and northern communities, and children living with domestic violence. This focus is currently funded by a five-year SSHRC partnership grant (2015-2020).

8) CEO for United Way of PEI Job Description

Job Purpose 
The CEO will bring exceptional leadership and strategic abilities, strong organizational management and communication skills. S/he will work across private, public, corporate and third sector to improve conditions in the community. S/he will be an effective fundraiser for The United Way of PEI, with the ability to conceive of, build support for, and implement strategies for increasing funding. The CEO will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.
