Don't Cheat, Grow the Party!

Dear Fellow Republican,

What is it called when county party officers falsify delegate lists to exclude people duly elected at a county convention or mass meeting? What is it called when a county party sends correspondence telling duly elected delegates to a convention to not show up?

Cheating. And it’s happening in our party, right now, in Georgia.

While we have been making efforts for years to increase turnout and involvement in the Republican Party throughout Georgia, there’s a small group of party “leaders” who seem to believe that the Republican Party should be more like a private country club than an open, inclusive, and transparent party where you have a voice in electing leadership.

In Newton County, I was invited to speak to a group of about 30+ people the week before the Mass Precinct Meetings. There, I explained to them what the party did, how it worked, and how and why to get involved. The crowd consisted of people who had previously worked hard for the Newton County GOP years ago, as well as local Republicans who had never known about the party but had decided to get involved due to various local issues. At the Mass Precinct Meetings, over 80 such people showed up that shared that philosophy and were excited to get involved.

Then, those people received this letter, in violation of the State Convention Call and Georgia GOP Rules (which preside over any county rule), in an attempt to exclude them from participating. The delegate list given out to candidates for county party office excluded almost all of these people, including only 37 of the approximately 120 total attendees. (News Link)

In DeKalb County, where I am a resident, we also had extremely good attendance to the Mass Precinct Meeting. However, according to this e-mail, instead of simply asking Mass Precinct attendees about their political beliefs, the county party’s Communications Chair decided to scour the primary voting records of delegates and inquire whether or not she could personally exclude duly-elected delegates from the convention. Apparently, some believe that if you don’t want new leadership to be elected, it’s okay to exclude new Republicans (or those who may have cross-over voted (ex. against Cynthia McKinney in 2002 and 2006)) from participating. Again, this is in violation of the State Convention Call and Georgia GOP Rules .

This is happening in some of the largest counties in Georgia, and you deserve for it to stop before it destroys the future of our party. You deserve party leadership that is fairly elected, and that will ensure that our rules are followed and every county throughout the state is heard.

As county conventions and precinct meetings (under 80,000 population counties) approach on March 14, 2015, I urge you to encourage all those who share Republican principles to get involved in the party. I also ask for your vote as Georgia GOP Chairman in May. Together, we can ensure that we have a transparent, strong, and growing party that stands up for you and your principles.
