The PEI Coalition for Women in Government and Holland College Student Union are pleased to host a leaders’ forum on women’s issues on Tuesday April 14 from 10am-12pm in the Holland College CAST Building, 3rd Floor Boardroom. We are thrilled that the four party leaders will join us for the first forum on women’s issues since 1986.  Jill Lightwood will moderate the forum and members from over ten community organizations will pose questions inspired by the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Equality Report Card. The forum will be live streamed at www.hcsu.ca. For more information please contact Dawn at peiwomeningovernment@gmail.com or 902.218.2184.

The P.E.I. Home and School Federation will hold a Leaders Debate on Education on Saturday, April 11, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Victorian Room at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, 75 Kent Street, Charlottetown. The leaders of the Green, Liberal, NDP and PC parties have confirmed their attendance.

The debate, part of the Federation’s 62nd Annual General Meeting, will provide parents, guardians, teachers, administrators and staff with an opportunity to question the leaders on matters related to the public education system.

The debate will be moderated by Marion Murphy, respected former teacher and former P.E.I. Home and School Federation President. Questions will be developed collaboratively by P.E.I. Home and School Federation members as part of the annual meeting.

3) April Council Meeting to Open with a Poem

The City of Charlottetown will participate in the Canada-wide Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge at a Council meeting on April 13 in celebration of National Poetry Month.

The Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge project encourages municipal councils across Canada to take a few minutes at the beginning of their Council meetings to recognize the poets in their communities and the contribution of poetry to the arts in Canada. This initiative was created by Regina Mayor Michael Fougere in 2012.

“National Poetry Month and the Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge provide a platform for poets in our community to share their talents and passion for the art at a municipal level,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “There is so much creativity in Charlottetown and we are always looking for ways to honour artists within the broader community. Their efforts impact the city in a positive way and strengthen the arts and cultural sectors.”

Charlottetown poet Jane Ledwell is an award-winning poet and editor and has published one volume of poetry, Last Tomato, ad other individual poems and commissions. Ledwell is the full-time Executive Director of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to share my love of poetry in the Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge this month,” Ledwell said. “This Challenge is a great way to showcase local talent and to highlight poetry in unconventional aspects of our daily lives.”

Ledwell will read the poem “Horse in a Rut” from a project called “Bird Calls” that was a part of the PEI Council of the Arts Sesquicentennial Public Art Commission. The poem offers an unusual take on historic Charlottetown from the vantage point of a horse.

“After great success with our first Mayor’s City Poetry Challenge last year, we are pleased to continue highlighting PEI talent at our April council meeting with Jane Ledwell,” Mayor Lee said. “Our goal is not only honour local artists, but to also share their artistry with others.”

The next City Council meeting will be held at City Hall on Monday, April 13 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

To discuss this and other poetry initiatives with Dianne Hicks Morrow, the current PEI Poet Laureate, email: peipoetlaureate@gmail.com. For more information about the PEI Council of the Arts Sesquicentennial Public Art Commissions, visit: http://2014.peica.ca/
